US Weekly Wrap-Up: 03.01.23

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—February 26 through March 1—in the Upper School.

The last Advisory of the term took place on Monday. Advisors checked in with students on finishing their work, preparing for their BVR Accelerator courses, and signing up for spring clubs.

Integrated Math 2 students put the finishing touches on their public spaces projects. The assignment tasked the class with locating, designing, and modeling public spaces that could serve their surrounding communities. The class presented their final models to their peers later in the week.

On Tuesday, Upper School students enjoyed a music performance in Bradley Hall. Various vocal and instrumental ensembles took the opportunity to showcase their work from throughout the term.

Mr. Matsusaka’s math students participated in a “Beaver Tank,” pitching original products to a panel of Beaver investors. Products included a solar-powered portable charger, a robotic arm that can soothe babies, and a dashboard mount that accommodates larger phones. Each panelist offered feedback, asked questions, and chose which products they would invest in.

The Urbanism + the Built Environment class held a project showcase on the D-Level on Wednesday. Following their trip to Savannah, GA, the class began investigating the use of space in and around Boston. After selecting a specific issue to address, students began designing solutions such as public gardens, revised transportation routes, a greener airport, and emergency protocols that would protect communities during a climate disaster. Students and community members toured the designs and heard from each group.

Chinese, chemistry, precalculus, and philosophy classes came together on Thursday to present their findings on AI. Each group discussed the pros and cons of AI being used in a specific field. Topics such as AI-generated music, the inclusion of AI in sports, and the future of finance technology were showcased.

There were no classes on Friday to allow Faculty members to finish out the winter term.
