Recap: Spring Reception for Students of Color and their Parents/Caregivers

A spring reception was held for students and families of color–including newly-enrolled families of color–to connect and learn more about making informed academic decisions at Beaver and beyond. The reception featured guest speakers Timothy L. Fields and Shereem Herndon-Brown, authors of The Black Family’s Guide to College Admissions.

In addition to the reception, the evening also served as an HBCU Night focused on familiarizing students with Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A panel of HBCU alums discussed what sets HBCUs apart from other universities and what their experiences were like. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences, foster a dialogue between parents, alums, experts, and students.

Overall, the night was incredibly engaging, informative, and fun. Families got the opportunity to engage with experts, which is especially important in light of the Supreme Court decision that disbanded affirmative action. I hope attendees walked away with a better sense of agency.
