Here are some highlights from this past week—September 23 through September 27—in the Upper School.

Students started the week with Advisory on Monday. Advisors walked students through Massachusetts’ anti-hazing laws, as required by the state. Advisors also reminded students about the upcoming deadline to apply to be an R+D Ambassador. Students that are interested in the role should reach out to Ms. St. Louis by next Monday, September 30.

On Tuesday, students in Media & It’s Influences presented research projects that used the lens of media theory to look at real world trends and issues. Some of the topics discussed include how millennials differ from gen z in their media consumption, the portrayal and cultivation of gender norms through media, and the empowerment of women on screen.

Award-winning author Jennifer De Leon spoke to students at an US meeting on Wednesday. De Leon discussed the importance of defining and sharing your story. To expand upon the talk, De Leon invited students on stage to share six-word stories that resonate with them. Featured stories included “I come from a strong lineage,” “fear is temporary, regret is forever,” and “try to cook without a recipe.”

Open Studios took place on Thursday evening, bringing parents/caregivers on campus to meet teachers, advisors, and staff. The event offered families a chance to connect with different departments and explore the opportunities available to students in the upcoming year.

On Friday, students in Theories of Punishment had a debrief after their visit to MCI Norfolk on Thursday. The trip–which gave students the opportunity to meet with incarcerated individuals in the prison–was full of complicated emotions, thoughts, and questions. Through open discussion, the class will be segueing into a month-long project tasking them with diving deep into a topic of their choice relating to the justice system.
