Here are some highlights from this past week—October 7 through October 11—in the Upper School.
In Advisory on Monday, students engaged in an activity centered around writing six word stories. After students were encouraged to think about how they would like to remember this school year, each advisory crafted a six word story that represents their goals. Some examples include…
- “Overcoming fears, finding connections, embodying community” -Cardenas Advisory
- “Socially Mature, Independently Prepared, Rewarding Celebration” -Zachry Advisory
- “We will learn and grow together” -Xu Advisory
- “Growing through challenge but having fun” -Veto Advisory
Students in Socio-Economics of Sports heard from Rachel Causey, Communication Coordinator for Sport & Right Alliances. Causey spoke to students about the work her organization does to protect and expand human rights in sports. Students had a chance to ask questions, sparking conversations around advocacy work, sports law, geopolitical complications, and the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
On Tuesday, the Theories of Punishment class was visited by Joshua Levy, Acting United States District Attorney in the District of Massachusetts (and Beaver parent!). Levy discussed many of the class’ current topics including federal law enforcement, criminal justice, current reform movements, and public service. Levy also touched on the importance of restorative justice and how he includes it in his work.

At an Upper School meeting on Wednesday, students heard from their peers who participated in the Hiatt Summer Fellowship program during summer break. The Hiatt Summer Fellowship provides Beaver students the financial support to explore and participate in leadership and civic engagement opportunities with nonprofit organizations. This summer, 68 students participated with over 3,700 hours collectively served.
Thursday evening, a meeting was held for students enrolled in Advanced Spanish: Intercultural Dynamics and their families and caregivers to discuss an upcoming immersive trip to Spain. Topics included a course overview, the itinerary, and how to register. Anyone interested in learning more is encouraged to contact Danielle Oliver.
