A letter from Board President: Expanding the Nature of School through new programs, spaces

A letter from Board President, Heeten Kalan

Dear members of the Beaver community,

I am fortunate to work with a dedicated and talented Board of Trustees in advancing the school’s mission, ensuring our fiduciary health and wellness, and supporting Kim Samson, Head of School, in engaging and pushing her priorities forward. As I begin my third year as Board President, I am excited by what we have accomplished and for Beaver’s future as a cutting-edge, dynamic, and student-focused educational institution.

Last year, in partnership with the Board and members of the larger community, Kim announced a comprehensive set of Priorities aligned with Beaver’s distinctive school culture. These priorities offer opportunities for growth in both key program areas and in our physical space, and as a parent of two recent alumni, I am thrilled to see the direction in which we are heading.

Kim and the Core Senior Leadership team lead the day-to-day operations of the school, and with the faculty and staff, they design and facilitate the student learning experience. While each group has its own set of responsibilities, our collective work is informed by a collaborative spirit and a shared commitment to our vision: Expanding the Nature of School for Students.

Strategic planning in the key Priority areas, along with a robust philanthropic community, has allowed Beaver to seed and scale new programming and take advantage of new opportunities. Kim and I are thrilled to share Beaver has recently acquired a property adjacent to the school, which will be used for our academic program and office space that, once removed from the main building, will allow us to repurpose current campus spaces to be even more student-focused. Kim and her team are thoughtfully considering the kinds of student programming that will find their new home at 245 Woodland Road. The addition of this new space has brought into focus our overall space needs and how we can re-vision and optimize our current space.

I would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our Trustees and their commitment to Beaver’s future. Our discussions routinely involve a focused and layered approach to achieving multiple goals. Meeting current and future student needs, faculty salaries, affordability, sustainability, and fiscal prudence are among our top priorities. We are incredibly fortunate to leverage such a diverse and talented group of Trustee voices and perspectives as we align improvements and expansion with school budgeting and forecasting. I am proud of our Board’s work over the last few years and am grateful for our ability to keep all Beaver community members in mind as we make decisions.

As we plan and implement programs that directly benefit current students and lay the foundation for future generations, your philanthropic support and partnership give Beaver the flexibility to evolve, improve, and innovate. Thank you for all that you do to elevate our students’ experiences.

With gratitude,

Heeten Kalan
Board President
