What is life like as a Beaver student? We interviewed several students across all grades—from middle school to senior year—to get a peek into the Beaver student experience. Below you’ll hear from Azariyah Goodman—a rising Beaver sophmore. Azariyah shares her thoughts on freshman year, her favorite spot on campus, and more!
Congrats on finishing freshman year! What does your upcoming year look like?
My upcoming year is filled with new things. Instead of staying within my comfort zone, I decided to step outside the box and try new things. For example, I will be playing volleyball in the spring and joining a new club!
The first day of 9th grade can be intimidating. What were some things you were nervous about? Did they come true and/or how did you overcome them?
Some things I was nervous about going into 9th grade were that I wasn’t going to find people who shared the same interests as me. As the day went on, I realized that everyone was just as nervous as me (especially being new to Beaver) this helped me be less worried knowing that everyone feels the same. A piece of advice for this would just be to talk to as many people as you can that way you can get a feel of who you want to hang out with!
How did the community make you feel on your first day at Beaver? How was it making friends?
Coming into Beaver as a new student I felt so welcomed. I felt free to ask which hallway my next class would be and I didn’t feel embarrassed for that. Since I wasn’t as afraid of putting myself out there and pushing my nervousness aside, it wasn’t hard finding people that had the same vibe as me.
Another piece of advice that I want to share is that the same people that you may meet on the first day or the people that you hang out with the following week may not be the same ones you keep throughout the rest of the year but you shouldn’t let that stop you from getting to know the people in your grade!
What did you like about freshman year?
I liked how much I learned about myself. I tried a lot of new things freshman year and I never thought that I would be interested in, like costume design. Freshman year was a good year to try new things and learn more about myself and my interests!
What’s a project you enjoyed working on?
One project I enjoyed working on was called the “Marshmellow Launcher” in Physics. The goal of this project was to see who (in class) could launch a marshmallow the furthest which although it sounds easy was a challenge but was also fun. I learned to have a lot of patience with this project and although my group’s launcher didn’t win, I enjoyed working on it and my group and I put lots of effort into it.
What’s your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus would probably be Dr. Wilson’s office because he has amazing fidgets and great pictures on his walls. I always look forward to a free G-Block or anytime after school to go, grab a fidget, and talk about how my day went or hear some (un)funny dad jokes!
