Here are some highlights from this past week—September 30 through October 4—in the Upper School.
On Monday, students were encouraged to wear Beaver gear as part of spirit week. Student Council selected the theme–alongside themes for the rest of the week–to build excitement leading up to HarvestFest on Friday.
In Advisory, students worked through a series of reflection questions related to author Jenn De Leon’s visit last week. The questions prompted advisories to discuss concepts of belonging and identity.
Jason Brown–a 2001 alumnus and managing partner of Blue Flag Partners–spoke to the Business and Economics club on Tuesday. Brown chatted with students about his work in real estate and hospitality and answered questions about his career path. To read more about Brown’s visit, click here!
Students in the honors course Advanced Biology: Anatomy & Physiology participated in lung dissections on Wednesday. After a brief demonstration, students got to work identifying, dissecting, labeling, and analyzing various parts of lamb organs.
School was closed on Thursday in Observance of Rosh Hashanah.
On Friday, Students in the English elective Great Books wrote letters to characters in their current novel, The Green Mile by Stephen King. After printing the letters, addressing and decorating envelopes, and redistributing them, each student read someone else’s composed letter. Some of the letters were written from the students themselves; most others were written as if from characters in the world of the novel.
Campus was abuzz on Friday leading up to Harvestfest. In the morning, Upper School students gathered for a faculty/staff vs student volleyball game. After a close game (and a lot of cheering and commentating), faculty/staff emerged victorious!
Students, teachers, families, and community members gathered in the evening to root on Beaver athletes at Harvestfest. Food trucks and a pop-up swag shop were enjoyed on the Bloomberg Plaza as soccer, field hockey, and volleyball games against Portsmouth Abbey took place all afternoon. The event culminated in a boys varsity soccer game under the lights on the upper field. For score updates and schedules, check out the BVR Athletics website!
