Harding ’65 Named BCDS 2010 Distinguished Alumna

Beaver has named Anna Laurence (“Laurie”) Harding ’65, a New Hampshire State Representative and registered nurse, the recipient of the school’s 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award. This award recognizes a Beaver graduate who has achieved distinction in a particular field of endeavor, whether it be in a chosen profession, through formal or volunteer activities or through personal commitment to an issue, project or cause.

Mueller ’60 Wins BCDS Alumni Award for Social Responsibility

Susanne D. Mueller ’60 received Beaver’s 2010 Driscoll Award for Social Responsibility for her efforts to develop an awareness of key issues facing developing nations and to effect positive change through her scholarship and field work. Head of School Peter Hutton announced the award at Susanne’s 50th reunion in May. The annual award reflects the Driscoll family’s long commitment to Beaver, and to social justice, and recognizes a Beaver graduate’s exceptional commitment to social justice.

Young Alum Launches Virtual Sports Stock Market

Ever wished you could buy and sell shares of your favorite professional sports teams? Beaver alum Jeremy Levine ’05 is launching StarStreet Sports to give individual investors a way to legally trade virtual shares in teams, starting with this month’s World Cup. Jeremy, a Syracuse University grad, developed his business plan and computer model while taking part in the TechStars development program in Boston this spring, which funds and mentors promising entrepreneurs. He was interviewed on CNN (June 3), describing his plans for getting StarStreet off the ground.

Community Garden Takes Root on BCDS Campus

A kitchen garden is the newest addition to the Beaver campus, the result of a community effort spearheaded by Hiatt Center Director of Community Engagement Kit Beaudouin ’72 and Dave Madan ’01. Dave Madan ’01 helped the students construct two 5’ x 8’ raised beds in a sunny corner of the Alumni Garden (originally designed by Carol Dwyer ’54) adjacent to the library and the science wing.

Reunion 2010 Recap

Reunion 2010 reunited classmates and friends from across seven decades at events held on and off campus on May 7 & 8.

The official celebration kicked off Friday morning with alumni visits to classes and a luncheon in the Rogers Room honoring the Class of 1960’s 50th Reunion. Barbara Ray Stevens ’60 gave a touching tribute to her classmates and the vast changes women of their era have lived through. Friday evening’s party in the Visual and Performing Arts Center brought together alumni of all ages, and the Class of 1960 capped off a busy day with dinner that evening at Peter Hutton’s house.

Jacquet ’06 in New Stage Production in Boston

Actress Fedna Jacquet ’06 will appear in a new play, The Emancipation of Mandy and Miz Ellie, premiering in Boston, from April 30 through May 22, 2010. The drama, by Boston playwright and director Lois Roach of Company One, is set at the time of the Emancipation Proclamation, and includes music and movement by the OrigiNation Dance Troupe. Fedna, who is graduating from Brown University this spring, plays Cook Mary.

Update from a Model Alum

Several keen faculty eyes spotted former student Vaughn (“Ayinde”) Gray ’04 as the model on the cover of the Boston Globe’s Sunday magazine on April 4. Vaughn was kind enough to send us this update on his career as a model and a clean energy consultant: “Modeling is a part-time occupation. It started after a Boston photographer approached me and said he’d like to distribute my picture to a modeling agency here in Boston, Maggie Inc. Since graduating from Connecticut College with a degree in economics and psychology (thanks to Beaver’s psychology department), I’ve worked in the financial services industry, until more recently when I decided to partner up with a Philadelphia-based clean energy company, LED Savings Solutions.

Beaver Alumna Honored for Life’s Work as Photo-Historian

Photographer Carol Beckwith ’63 is the recipient of the 2010 Wings WorldQuest Women in Discovery Lifetime Achievement Award. She shares the award, which will be presented on April 15 in New York City, with her longtime creative partner Angela Fisher.

For more than three decades, the two women have documented tribal cultures across Africa, together publishing fourteen books including their acclaimed double volume African Ceremonies (1999), which won a United Nations Award for Excellence.
