MS Minutes: 10.01.24

Hello, Middle School Students and Families! Below is this week’s MS Meeting recap.

Caroline Mitchell ’30 and Olivia Smith ’30 ran today’s meeting. You can check out the slides from this week’s meeting here.

THE BVR STUDENT

Reade Mrazek ’30 presented: Tries New Things

“I think it’s important to try new things because if you don’t, you may not know what you are good at and may miss opportunities.  I’m acting in the fall play this year, and this is new for me.  I’m having fun.  If you haven’t already, sign up for something you haven’t done before.”

Eka Krishnan ’29, Brette Buckley ’29, and Ave Hurley ’29, this year’s head admission ambassadors, announced that Admission tours and interviews started this week. They encouraged all middle school students to be positive and welcoming to prospective families.

Catherine Crooker ’30 announced the Student Body Advisory Council.  SBAC is a group of middle school students who meet with a middle school administrator about once a month to talk about issues the students feel are important to them and the middle school community.  SBAC is important because it is a way to help forward students’ ideas and concerns and help make a difference in your community. Catherine said she enjoyed being able to talk about issues that were important to her last year with Ms. Smith.

Students can apply by filling out an application emailed to them today.

Rishaan Chowdhury ’29 and David Yatskar ’29 announced another Debate Team that will start in the winter and will participate in tournaments. This team is for BVR students who have already done the Lumos Debate program in previous years. Rishaan will be sending out an email so students can sign up.

Students who are looking for a quiet space to read during recess may read books in room 200 (laptops are not allowed). This is available every day except Wednesdays when Book Club meets in room 200.

We talked about The BVR Way; I spoke about acting with integrity and considering the thoughts of others, with the example of not touching other people’s belongings, like other people’s backpacks.

We also reviewed the BVR Way around elevator use on campus and external doors at BVR.

Continuing the Conversation

Our “Continuing the Conversation” section is an occasional callout in our MS Meeting Meeting Minutes to help foster an inclusive community. This feature will include a prompt for you and your student to reflect on, discuss, and share.

The BVR Way:

  • Why is not touching other people’s belongings important? How would you feel if you saw that someone had removed something from your backpack?
  • How do you talk about school expectations at home as a family?
  • What do you wish would be a BVR way?
