Angela Lorenz
Sports Garb/led
Mosaic Exhibit at the Beaver Griffin Gallery
February 1 through February 18
We’re excited to announce the Angela Lorenz Mosaic Exhibition is coming to the Griffin Gallery on February 1.
Sports Garb/led—which will run from February 1 to February 18—will feature works inspired by the cultural differences between gender and Title IX (the 1972 law which prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives funding from the federal government).
Lorenz’s mosaics challenge previous assumptions made on iconic images of women. By appropriating these figures into her own style she helps the viewer re-contextualize history and allows the audience to think about how perceptions can change over time. They also remind us that we have the power to re-interpret history. Lorenz, by showing this work at over a dozen colleges and universities, is using these mosaics as a form of outreach and activism.
“Showing her work in the gallery gives space to these works so our community can think deeply about how and why they were made.” — David Ingenthron, Head of Visual Arts
Upper School and Middle School students will engage in conversations about Title IX—having discussions with the artist and creating their own artwork inspired by Lorenz’s work and mission. They’ll do Design Challenges and create Wonder Projects. In addition, the Female Activists and Allies club had the opportunity to talk directly with Lorenz about her work.
“We are grateful for opportunities to connect with creators about their work. It inspires our community to explore topics that elevate community conversations and actions towards social justice. Displaying Angela Lorenz’s work at Beaver models how art and other creative forms can be a catalyst for change and may lead students to recognize how they, too, can create and design work that leads to change.” — Liz Latour, Director of the Hiatt Center
Going beyond the Beaver community, participants in this year’s Independent School Gender Project Symposium will come to campus to check out the exhibit and hear a presentation from Lorenz on the evening of February 7. The symposium brings together educators from around the country to empower them to advance gender dialogue and equity at work, school, and beyond.
“It is a privilege—and part of our public purpose here at Beaver—to bring together experts from different disciplines (like the artist Angela Lorenz) with educators from all over the country interested in advancing their teaching practice. As a leader in innovative education, we see it as our responsibility to lead and host discussions around critical topics that both align with our mission and are important to our community.” — Zaira Santiago, Associate Head of School for Special Projects
This exhibit is open to the BVR community; email David Ingenthron with any questions.
This show was made possible by The Nancy Lincoln ’61 Arts Fund, which enriches every Beaver student’s experience by inviting exciting visiting artists to campus and creating opportunities for students to take field trips to be immersed in the visual arts in Boston.
