Here are some highlights from this past week—January 13 through January 17—in the Upper School.
On Monday, a group of female-identifying students traveled to Cushing Academy for the STEAM conference. A number of New England schools attended the conference, with participants engaging in workshops and networking opportunities with other female-identifying students and mentors who love STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).
In Arabic, students were visited by staff members from the Jewish Family Services of Metrowest. These guest speakers discussed their approach to resettling families with refugee status in the local Boston area and invited students to get involved. Beaver’s emerging partnership with JFSMW–facilitated by the Hiatt Center–will continue in the weeks to come as students write letters and create videos to send to families in the shared language of Arabic.
On Wednesday, students in Intro to Visual Arts and Spanish: Current Events took a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts to view the exhibit Power of the People: Art and Democracy. The exhibit showcases how art can echo politics and encourage citizens to contemplate democracy. This trip serves as part of an upcoming Beaver Accelerator course.
Artist Katiana Rodriguez visited Upper School students on Wednesday to discuss her career and lead art workshops throughout the day. To read more about Rodriguez’s visit, click here.
In US History: Nationalism, students participated in an assignment tasking them with dissecting the Constitution. After paraphrasing each section of the document, students then worked together to identify the common themes such as limited government and separation of powers. This assignment is currently on display on the C-Level.
There were no classes on Thursday due to parent/teacher conferences.
On Friday, students in the Film Club hosted the annual Beaver Film Festival. This year, each student filmmaker was challenged to create a heist movie featuring a custom prop: a Beaver soda can. Following the screening, multiple awards were handed out such as best editing, best visuals, and best picture.
