US Weekly Wrap-Up: 10.06.23

Posted on October 6, 2023

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—October 2 through October 6 —in the Upper School.

School was closed on Monday in observation of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

On Tuesday, students were encouraged to dress in the theme of “anything but a backpack” as part of spirit week. Student Council selected the theme–alongside themes for the rest of the week–to build excitement leading up to HarvestFest on Friday.

Artist Jamal Thorne discussing one of his pieces in the exhibit.

Mixed Media students took a class field trip on Wednesday to the Jamal Thorne exhibit at Praise Shadows Art Gallery in Brookline. Students spoke directly to the artist about his craft, inspiration, and goals. Thorne encouraged the class to use more layers to their work, letting their creations build until they are something completely new.

Entrepreneurship students meet with Nexamp CEO and CMO.

Students in the BVR-X course Entrepreneurship with a Purpose also took a field trip on Wednesday, visiting the Nexamp Headquarters in downtown Boston. The class toured Nexamp and met with CEO (and Beaver parent!) Zaid Ashai to learn about how the organization’s focus on clean energy guides their operations as a business.

Hi, Barbie!

Back at Beaver, the hallways were full of pink for Barbie day. Countless references to the movie were made, with some students even replicating costumes of their favorite characters!

Pumpkins line the Front Circle after the pumpkin carving competition.

On Thursday, a pumpkin carving competition took place on the Cohn Terrace. Students joined together with their peers across all grades to conceptualize and execute jack-o’-lantern designs. With the goal to either be the spookiest or most creative pumpkin, each house team utilized their creativity (and humor) to have a shot at winning points in the year-long house competition. Check out the winners below!

Thursday’s spirit week theme was “decades” day, inspiring students to dress like their favorite decade.

HarvestFest took place on Friday. The day-long celebration kicked off with a pep rally featuring a faculty vs. staff volleyball game. After a short warm-up, both teams took the court to much applause. Students put up an incredibly entertaining fight, but it was ultimately the faculty team that walked away with the win (25-14 faculty).

The theme for the day was “wear all black,” inspiring students to have unity in their support for the Beaver athletes competing later in the afternoon.

Varsity girls soccer finishes off HarvestFest with a game under the lights.

Starting at 2, Beaver athletes began the night-long series of games against Portsmouth Abbey. Food trucks, a pop-up swag shop, and live music were enjoyed on the Bloomberg Plaza as the Beaver community arrived for the event. From Gym A to the far side of the upper field, cheers could be heard as students gathered to support their peers. The excitement reached its peak with the finale of the event, a girls varsity game under the lights.
