MS Minutes: 10.24.23

Hello, Middle School Students and Families! Here’s a look at what’s happening in the Middle School this week and a recap of the Feed Your Brain Conference!

Catherine da Silva ’30 and Layla Gold ’30 ran today’s meeting. You can check out the slides from this week’s meeting here.

THE BVR STUDENT

At Middle School meetings throughout the year, students present elements of The BVR Student.

Alexandra Natan ’29, Charlie Daly ’29, and Emerson Daly ’29 presented Incorporates Feedback by Reflecting, Asking for Help, and Trying Again.

I chose it because I think it’s important when you are at school and doing your work. You can use feedback to help you make your future work better. When you ask for help, the teacher can help you understand better and then you can do your work to the best ability. Trying again is important because if you try once and fail, you should try again. You can learn from your mistakes and focus your learning to attempt again, that way you can look at it from a different perspective. When you step back from something, you can see it again with a new point of you. For example, sometimes when I’m doing my math homework, there is a problem I can’t get, I move on, and then when I come back to it, it’s easy, and I just make it bigger in my head. This is an important part of the BVR Student because it’s a good work habit and lets you do your best work.

FEED YOUR BRAIN BOOK BUFFET

The Collectors by Jacqueline West

Recommended by Analise Gottschalk ’29

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK
The Collectors is a story about a boy named Giovanni Carlos Gaugez Garcia Markson ( Van.) His mother is an opera singer, and they just moved to New York. Van begins to see suspicious things that nobody seems to notice. The author wrote it very well, and it certainly hooks you in.

WHY I THINK YOU WOULD LIKE IT
You’ll like the book if you like wishes, cute creatures (with evil intent), and fiction.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Students were reminded that Parent/Caregiver Conferences are on the next two Fridays: October 27 and November 3. Students are encouraged to attend their conferences. The babysitting and CPR/AED classes are happening on Friday; I emailed students and their parents/caregivers who got into the class.

The second Hiatt Leadership Institute was yesterday morning on the D-Level. Ms. St Louis, Ms. Graham, and Ms. G joined 25 students to learn why it’s important to step back and try to understand a problem before jumping in to try to solve it.

Catherine da Silva ’30 said, “Our challenge was related to a group of 20 whales stranded at the beach in South Boston. Something interesting for me was learning about the Iceberg method, which is a method used to solve problems and think deeper into them to get a better solution. I also learned about the pilot whale strandings in New Zealand, which is what we used as the challenge to teach us how to use the Iceberg method. Something fun was working in teams to solve the challenge.

Addie Marsh ’28 reminded students Halloween is in a week. Students are encouraged to wear costumes to school but must fill out a form with their costume information before tomorrow.

Jonah Freifeld ’29 and Analise Gottschalk ’29 announced the performances of the Middle School Fall Play, The Alibis happening this Thursday and Friday, October 26 and 27, at 6 p.m. in Bradley Hall.

The form to buy tickets went out yesterday. The show runs for about 70 minutes, so if your child is attending the show, please pick them up no later than 7:30 p.m.

Ushers for the show are:

EVENT RECAP: FEED YOUR BRAIN CONFERENCE

Students recapped last Thursday’s Feed Your Brain Conference, sharing what they learned and their favorite part of their session.

  • Keola Appleton ’28, spoke about Cooking with Ms. Hollos “I learned how to make crepes and my favorite part of the experience was eating the crepes. It was really fun.”
  • Catherine Crooker ’30 spoke about Cupcake Decorating with Ms. Jones. “I had a lot of fun and I learned how to make flowers with icing.”
  • Addie Marsh ’28 and Zach Chiu ’29 spoke about House of Cards with Ms. Garayua, Ms. Jain, and Ms. Latour. Addie said, “I learned that communication can be difficult because sometimes you disagree or don’t understand but you need to adapt. My favorite part was switching from one group to another and trying to figure out what you were doing in the new group without talking”. Zach said, “I found it fun that we played different games in different groups and it was also fun how there was an enforcer and only the enforcer could talk. Something I found surprising about this session is that some of us couldn’t communicate during the game, although I could because I was an enforcer. Something I learned is that sometimes it is hard to make a hard decision when there is lots of pressure.”
  • Zuzu Wyett ’28 and Kylie Marcus ’28 spoke about Swag Station with Coach Kuntz. “I learned how to plan before making my final product. My favorite part was creating the shirt I drew on paper.”
  • Sam Singer ’28 spoke about Escape Room with Ms. Sullivan. “I learned better collaboration skills. My favorite part was when we escaped in record time, getting the high score of the day”.
  • Patrick Shea ’29 spoke about Advisory Beav-Hive with the R+D Team “I learned about multiple things you can do on the D-Level, like soldering. My favorite part was hanging out with my friends while crafting. Remember, if you haven’t finished your tile you can work on it during CREATE and R-TIME. Tiles are organized in advisory bins or on the drying rack. Make sure your tile is done and in your advisory bin by next week.”
  • Henry Rice ’29 spoke about Weight Room Basics with Jordan McComb. “I had a lot of fun and learned different exercises that I did not know about before.”
  • Liam Weeks ’29 spoke about Volleyball with both of the Ms. Grahams. “It was a lot of fun. I learned how to serve and hit the ball over the net”
  • Cassie Scott ’28 spoke about Name That Tune with Dr. Wilson. “I learned that I am actually really good at this. My favorite part of the experience was being partners with Reid and doing so well.”
