Posted on April 18, 2023

Beaver will be hosting its first ever Iftar night on Tuesday, April 18th. The event will include delicious food, music, henna tattoos, and a chance to celebrate Beaver’s Muslim community. In this interview, members of Beaver Muslim Affinity Sebah Beshir ’24, Gibran Ashai ’26, Zak Faris ’25 share details about planning the event and what they hope it brings to Beaver.

Can you share more about the upcoming Iftar night event?

Zak Faris: This is going to be Beaver’s first Iftar night so it’s really special. It’s nice to represent our culture and our communities so it’s a pretty special.

Gibran Ashai: We thought throwing an event would be fun for people and we want visibility. We wanted to throw a fun night with henna, cute decorations, a photo-booth, and really good food.

Sebah Beshir: This is our opportunity to share how we spend the month of Ramadan and share more about our culture. This is our chance for people to find out more about what we’re passionate about.

How was the process of planning this event?

Sebah Beshir: This is my first time planning an event at Beaver. Our advisor for our Affinity Group has been very helpful. We’ve had a lot of time so that’s helped. Since this is the first, it will go more smoothly next year.

What can someone expect when attending the Iftar night?

Zak Faris: You can expect great food, good music. It’s not about educating yourself but more enjoying the culture.

Gibran Ashai: Yeah, it’s not even educational, it’s more a social event. Just good food and fun!

What is your biggest takeaway from the work you’ve put into this event?

Sebah Beshir: It would have been helpful to know the specifics of what we wanted last year. We’ll probably start planning for the next event before school starts next year.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Zak Faris: This is the first time Beaver will be hosting an Iftar event and we are very excited for it.

Gibran Ashai: Yeah! We really hope you guys can make it

Sebah Beshir: Make sure you come!
