Upper School Weekly Wrap-Up: 09.16.22

Posted on September 16, 2022

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week- September 12 through September 16- in the Upper School.

Monday kicked off the first full week of the 22-23 school year. Head of School Kim Samson reflected on the first week back to school in her first blogpost of the year.

Students learned more about clubs on Tuesday during the Upper School Club Presentations. Student leaders of each club had a chance to record videos promoting what their club is about and what they hope to accomplish this year. US students now have the opportunity to sign up for their Term 1 club choice, which they will meet with once a week on Tuesdays. To learn more about what clubs are available at Beaver this term and to watch the student leader videos, click here.

Wednesday marked the start of the Fall Athletics season; you can check out this week’s scores at the bottom of this post. You can also follow the BVR Athletics Instagram to stay up to date on upcoming games and scores. We are so excited to root for our teams throughout the season!

In Upper School meeting, the appeal for Admission Ambassadors went out and Mr. Adjout shared about the process to apply for SDPs, Student Directed Projects. Student Council also had a chance to share more about the house system and competition that will run the duration of the school year. To finish out the meeting, students discussed the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began the following day.

On Thursday, 10th and 12th grade students had Class Meetings. 10th grade advisories paired up to participate in a scavenger hunt themed around “what is in my backpack.” 12th graders connected with Kim Samson, who chatted with them about her summer travels and what she has been reading and listening to over the break. Afterwards, she shared with students what she hopes Beaver will focus on in the upcoming year, including connecting with others.

“Connection is why we’re here. It is what gives meaning and purpose to our lives.”

-Head of School Kim Samson

Last week, 11th grade students brainstormed on how to pass down their knowledge and experience to 9th graders. In Thursday’s Advisory, the 9th grade class paired up with 11th graders to hear their advice and be welcomed into the Upper School.

On Friday, students in Anatomy and Physiology attended the Harvard Medical School MEDScience program, which Beaver has taken part of for the last six years. The MEDScience program is an innovative Biology course that immerses students in simulated medical emergencies, providing them with the real-life experiences of medical professionals. Anatomy and Physiology students will attend the program weekly.

Affinity Group Student Leaders met with Mr. Manyuru and faculty from the Hiatt Center to start preparations for the Affinity meetings that will start next week. These voluntary meetings provide students with a safe space to explore identity, support one another, and engage in thought-provoking activities.
