BVR academics: Lab experiments with the Chemistry Applications class

Posted on May 5, 2020

Class: Chemistry Applications
Grade: Upper School
Teachers: Sam Reich, Larry McKinney, Whitney Koch

Students in Chemistry Applications had the option to select from three experiments using equipment and products they had at home to create a video presentation of the experiment. They gained hands-on laboratory experiences and observed how these systems responded to external stress. Each student came up with how they presented the experiment in a creative way.

Follow along as students discover what happens in each of these labs.

Watch as Tommy Hicks ’22 shows us what happens when you decompose hydrogen peroxide into oxygen gas and water.

Lab Option 2: Rusty Nail

Watch as Julian Kennedy ’21 shows us what happens when you create a reaction between iron metal and oxygen gas to create rust.

Lab Option 3: Naked Egg
(adopted from Imagination Station)
Watch asĀ  Jayden Lee ’22 shows us what happens when you soak an eggshell in vinegar to start a chemical reaction that dissolves the calcium carbonate shell.
