BVR Senior Experience 2020: May 11-29

Posted on May 5, 2020

For 2020, we reimagined our Senior Experience program—aka the last three weeks of the senior spring term—to keep our seniors as safe, curious, inspired, and celebrated as possible.

The program is designed to empower seniors to bring their ideas to life by calling on what they have learned throughout their education so far. They are choosing to work on projects that are ambitious, complex, creative, and unique, which is a reflection of who they are as individuals and as a class.” — Liz Latour, Director of the Hiatt Center

They were able to choose from the following opportunities to design their own experience:

Virtual Internship

Beaver community members—faculty, parents, and alums—along with community partners will be hosting virtual senior interns.

Examples:

  • Nicole Kelly-Aglio will be the Social Media Intern for Sustainable Wellesley, where she will be mentored by Beaver parent Phyllis Theermann P’24.
  • Other students will intern with Beaver departments, such as Global History, Marketing, English, Hiatt, College Counseling, Philanthropy and Engagement, and more.

Self-Directed Project

Seniors submitted a proposal outlining how they would spend their time meaningfully on a passion project with the support of a faculty coach.

Examples:

  • Building Beaver’s campus in Minecraft
  • Writing short stories in the sci-fi/horror genre
  • Hosting virtual baking classes for children.

Harvard MEDScience for Seniors

Participants will experience the real-life excitement of emergency room care while working with teammates to gather the full patient history and manage their symptoms through tele-conferencing. Cases will focus on genetics and immunology.

Epiic Solutions Startup Institute for Seniors

This is a hands-on program for Beaver students curious about innovation, entrepreneurship, and design. Participants will work in small teams to develop their own start-up ideas and explore core concepts such as problem identification, market research, opportunity mapping, competitive landscaping, ideation and evaluation, prototyping, sustainable revenue models, marketing, and pitching. It will culminate with a virtual pitch festival.

Visual Art: Home Studio

This is an option for self-driven artists that would like to receive feedback from faculty in the Visual Art Department.

Examples:

  • An interactive film where the viewer chooses the storyline
  • A series of abstract paintings that explore how color interacts

Thank you to Beaver faculty, staff, parents, and program partners who made this possible!
