Dr. Cummings’ Advanced Spanish: El Narco class discussed (in Spanish) supply and demand as they relate to both licit and illicit economies with Prof. Rodrigo Canales of the Yale University School of Management. Professor Canales, an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, explores how individuals’ backgrounds and personal identities affect the ways in which they interact with and change the institutional structures around them. His TED Talk, “The Deadly Genius of Drug Cartels”  (which is in English) explores the branding strategy of Mexican organized crime.  Professor Canales suggested that the War on Drugs will be over when we stop calling it the War on Drugs and starting thinking about the problem as a social problem and a health problem rather than as a security threat.
