Hello, Middle School Students and Families! Below is a recap of this week’s MS Meeting.
Sophie Herbstman ’30 and Esmeralda Wright ’30 ran today’s meeting. You can check out the slides from this week’s meeting here.
THE BVR STUDENT
Conor McKinley ’29 presented “takes time for mindful breaks to improve mood and reduce stress.”
I chose to present ‘takes time for mindful breaks to improve mood and reduce stress’ because this is an important skill to be able to be a successful student. Classes and homework can get stressful, so it is important to take breaks and recharge. I take mindful breaks when I am doing projects and essays so I can do my best work.

The Hiatt Leadership Institute, originally scheduled for February 10, is happening this Monday, February 24, at 8 a.m. on the D Level. Students will be learning about the relationship between being an effective leader and having a collective mindset that allows a leader to act from a place of care towards others on a team and even be perfectly comfortable letting everyone’s skills shine and be used to achieve the collective’s goal. Students can sign up using the form Ms. Garayúa shared today.
Ms. Garayúa from the Hiatt Center announced the Hiatt Summer Fellowship. Through the fellowship, middle school students participate in a summer leadership program of their choice. In addition, the fellowship offers funding for students who volunteer with one of our partner non-profit organizations or an organization of their choice. Students were encouraged to schedule a meeting with Ms. Garayúa at the Hiatt Center to learn more.
Emerson Daly ’29 and Elliott Fayne ’30 recapped some of the workshops they participated in last week during Feed Your Brain Day.
I participated in Pickles and Drawing with Bren Bataclan as part of my Feed Your Brain Day. One thing I learned is that making pickles is actually really easy and does not take a lot of work or ingredients. One thing I enjoyed was playing the trivia game to win one of Bren’s drawings.

In AI Hype, I learned a lot about the potential of AI and what it is already being used for. Some examples are that it is being used in Amazon warehouses to make the lives of the workers easier. In Design a Shoe, I learned about a famous shoe designer named Tinker Hatfield. He designed some of the most popular shoes today and was responsible for some shoes such as the Air Max 1s.
