After back-to-back Eastern Independent League and EIL Tournament titles, the Varsity Golf team aims to add another banner to the Dam this fall.
Led by longtime Head Coach Larry McKinney and Assistant Coach Jack Walter, Beaver is off to a strong 3–1 start. Senior captains Beckett Freid and Charlie Potter have helped lead the way, with strong contributions coming from throughout the lineup.
Freid has already posted rounds of 37 (+1), 33 (-2), and 36 (even par), while Potter has turned in rounds of 34 (-1), 35 (even par), and 35 (-1). Seniors David Kosberg and Evan Pozen have also delivered early highlights, including Kosberg’s two-over-par 38 against Portsmouth Abbey and Pozen’s one-under-par 34 against LCA.
But despite the familiar results, this year’s team looks very different from the groups that captured the last two championships. After graduating seven seniors last spring, Beaver entered the fall needing to rebuild much of its lineup and welcome a new group of players into varsity competition.
“The last two teams had a lot of experience and chemistry, while this team is still developing that,” Freid said. “What makes this year special is seeing everyone grow together and watching the newer players become more confident and comfortable competing at the varsity level. There’s a real sense that we’re building something new rather than trying to recreate the teams we had before.”
That makes defending back-to-back titles a little different this fall. Rather than simply picking up where last year’s team left off, this group is working to establish its own identity while maintaining the standard Beaver Golf has built.
“We know we’re not the same team we were the last two years, but our goal is to keep improving, compete as hard as we can, and build a strong team culture that we can carry forward,” Freid said. “As captains, we want to help everyone develop their game, enjoy being part of the team, and finish the season knowing we gave everything we had.”
Plenty of golf remains, with 12 regular-season matches before the EIL Tournament on November 10. For a young team following two championship seasons, the goal may be another banner, but this fall is also about building what comes next for Beaver Golf.
