When Eliza Lazzarino ’28, Lily Roetter ’28, and Romy Seidman ’28 came together to form a new club at Beaver, their goal was simple: to make a meaningful impact on and off campus. The group created the Social Impact Club, a space for students to raise concerns related to nearby communities and collaborate to find solutions. After only a few weeks as a club, the group has already launched their first initiative in partnership with the Newton Food Pantry
Our goal with the Social Impact Club is to try to make a difference. We’re not just focused on the Beaver community, we’re focused on social issues all around us.

For their first initiative, the Social Impact Club set their sights on food insecurity. “Club members told us they wanted to focus on hunger awareness,” says Lily Roetter ’28. “So we took that, learned about hunger awareness, and planned out how we wanted to take action.” Following their research and planning, the club narrowed in on Newton Food Pantry’s Kids’ Snack Bags program, an initiative that distributes bags of child-friendly snacks to local families. To support the cause, club members quickly got to work decorating bags to donate.
To maximize their impact, the Social Impact Club hosted a community event for all students to get involved. As Romy Seidman ’28 shares, “we wanted to open [the event] up to the entire school so people could feel part of it; we want the whole school to be aware of these social issues and to take action.” Students gathered on the Design Level to discuss food insecurity and design more bags to donate.
The process of organizing and hosting the event was a welcome challenge for club members. “We learned there’s a lot of steps to creating an event, it doesn’t just happen right away,” Lily Roetter ’28 says. “Communication is really important and you have to take initiative.”
Everyone can make a difference. Even taking 10 minutes out of your day to draw on bags makes a difference. We want everyone to feel like they’re part of making the change.
