What is life like as a Beaver student? We interviewed several students across all grades—from middle school to senior year—to get a peek into the Beaver student experience. Below you’ll hear from Mason Slugg—a rising sophomore. Mason shares about his first day on campus, making the most of more independence, and all of his Beaver favorites.

The first day of 9th grade can be intimidating. What were some things you were nervous about? How did you overcome them?
I was nervous about practically everything. It was the 3rd time I was on the Beaver campus. I was worried I wouldn’t find my classes, I had no friends there yet, and I didn’t know any of my teachers. My advisor/advisees were all super kind and inclusive to everyone else. They were the first people I was comfortable around. Then I could easily build my way out of the nest as everyone got more comfortable and closer with each other. By the end of the week, I already had a group of friends and knew my way around school.
What activities at Beaver helped you find community and feel a sense of belonging?
The activities I found I most belonged in were my advisory and cooking club. Surrounded by friends and teachers I knew very well, I found I was able to bond and enjoy these moments the most during my time in 9th grade.
What would you say is the BEST part of Beaver?
The lunch break. The lunch break not only gives you the amazing food that the dining staff cooks, but also time to do almost anything. I’ve spent the time working on projects, homework, playing games, and ultimate frisbee.
