US Weekly Wrap-Up: 09.20.24

Posted on September 20, 2024

Here are some highlights from this past week—September 16 through September 20—in the Upper School.

Students started the week on Monday with Advisory. Advisors checked in with students, previewed the upcoming week, and–in 9th grade–discussed the Admission Ambassador program and upcoming class rep elections.

The first club block of the year took place on Tuesday. Students spent the first meeting getting to know the other members of their club and making initial plans for the fall term.

The South Asian, Middle Eastern, Latinx, and Exploring Christianity Affinity Groups all met in the afternoon for the first time this year.

On Wednesday, students in Forensic Science created–and investigated–mock crime scenes around campus. Wearing coveralls and gloves, groups meticulously parsed through each scene collecting evidence in an effort to determine a cause of death and potential motive. Using this evidence, students will create reports that they will present in class.

Beaver alum Nat Brown ’15 stopped by the Socio-Economics of Sports class to chat about the world of sports betting on Thursday. Brown discussed how he created and coded a model that can generate profitable bets on various sports. Similarly, he touched on various aspects of the sports betting world including the changing legality of sports betting in the U.S., current business models employed by betting companies, and the risks of betting irresponsibly. You can read more about his visit here.

On Friday, students in the Literature of Food elective took a trip to an H Mart in Brookline. The visit comes as the class has been analyzing Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner, a novel centered around the cultural and emotional connections people have with food. After speaking with store employees and taking notes on the store, students did a bit of snack hunting.
