US Weekly Wrap-Up: 09.13.24

Here are some highlights from this past week—September 9 through September 13—in the Upper School.

Students kicked off the week with advisory on Monday. After checking in about an incredible First Friday, students took time to record and submit reflections on their learning styles, classroom preferences, and goals. This feedback was then passed along to advisors and teachers in an effort to build a more understanding, inclusive learning community.

A club fair was hosted on Tuesday, giving club leaders the opportunity to showcase and discuss their clubs with other US students. Club leaders created posters and videos to give prospective members an idea of what each club is about and what activities they participate in throughout the year.

In the afternoon, an Affinity Group fair was held in the front circle. Though Affinity Group attendance is not required, the fair gave students a better idea of how they can get involved with the various communities that exist at Beaver.

At an US meeting on Wednesday, leaders of a Dam Good Read–Beaver’s student-run book summer reading group–promoted their upcoming book discussion on Friday, September 27. Students interested in participating should reach out to Billye Toussaint.

Student leaders involved in Performing Arts announced this year’s lineup of shows, including the spring musical, 9 to 5.

On Thursday, students in the English elective Storytelling participated in a collage exercise. The class cut up from magazines to practice assembling a storyline out of smaller pieces. Following this, students created new collages using only poetry, music, and writing from their personal storytelling inspirations. By using their favorite pieces of art to create something new, students gained a deeper understanding of how to translate personal inspiration into original work.
