Posted on September 8, 2023

Here is a short wrap-up from the first week of school—September 5 through September 8—in the Upper School.

The first day of the 23-24 academic school year took place on Tuesday. Students arrived on campus excited to reunite with friends, meet their teachers, and begin a new year at Beaver. Seniors showed their class pride by wearing all white!

At the Opening Meeting on Tuesday, students heard from Head of School Kim Samson and Director of the Upper School Mr. Reddy about the upcoming year. Upper School President Emma Shub ’24 also spoke to students in her opening remarks.

For those of you who are new to the Beaver community, welcome. I’m thrilled to have you join us for your learning exploration and organized chaos. To those of you who are returning to Beaver for your second, fourth, or even seventh school year, welcome back. This is a wonderful time to reunite with classmates and create new relationships with new peers; what an exciting time for all!

On Wednesday, seniors met with college counseling to kickstart the year and plan for the college application process. This meeting will be followed by an event for senior families and caregivers, A Roadmap to Senior Year, which you can RSVP to here.

Thursday was picture day for all Beaver students! In the front circle, photographers captured pictures of students and faculty/staff to use for the 23-24 year. A picture retake day is planned for October 2.

The first week of school came to an end with First Friday! Each grade had a different agenda for the day focused on building community, meeting new classmates, and having fun!

  • For 9th graders, First Friday involved a competitive Amazing Race around campus that culminated in a DIY boat race. Congrats to Ms. Robertson’s Advisory for winning!
  • In 10th grade, exploring downtown Boston was the mission of the day. Students were challenged to earn points with their Advisory by completing tasks such as creating content with strangers and finding various landmarks.
  • 11th graders spent the day volunteering at Land Sake Farm, Dane Park, and Cradles to Crayons. Each location provided unique opportunities for students to connect with one another and support their surrounding communities.
  • In 12th grade, a trip to Hale Education—a non-profit educational organization— brought students together through team-building activities and a ropes course.

Following the excursions, a Kona Ice Truck arrived on campus to provide a sweet treat to end the first week of the school year!
