US Weekly Wrap-Up: 02.10.23

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—February 6 through February 10 —in the Upper School. 


Josh Kraft joined an Upper School Meeting on Monday as part of student council’s Speaker Series. Moderated by students Ian Travis ’23 and Anna Lazzarino ’23, the discussion with Kraft centered on how to build community and Kraft’s own career in philanthropy.


On Tuesday, students in the Empires to Independence history class took a trip to the Harvard Peabody Museum. The museum shares cultural heritage from around the world that students used to contextualize what they have learned in class.


At an Upper School Meeting on Wednesday, the Hiatt Center shared more information on the Hiatt Summer Fellowship. Next, R+D Ambassadors promoted a Valentine’s Day maker event involving cookie decorating and card making. Finally, a moment of silence was also observed for those impacted by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Two musicians featured in Hamilton visited Beaver for a series of master classes on strings. Violist/violinist Leslie Deshazor and bass player Alex Smith spoke with student musicians about improv, groove, and how to connect with one another when performing repertoire.


On Thursday, an ice skating trip took place for 9th and 10th grade students. By taking time to build community during the winter months, students are more prepared to finish out the year together. Additionally, students in the Theories of Punishment class went off campus for a trip to MCI Norfolk. In the weeks leading to the trip, students have been learning about the criminal justice system and the various processes associated with it.


The end of the week on Friday brought the Middle School musical, Matilda, to Beaver. Upper School students had the opportunity to work behind the scenes of the show as choreographers, costume designers, and production assistants. Beaver’s Model UN club also departed on Friday for a BosMUN conference.
