Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—October 17 through October 21 —in the Upper School.
On Monday, Class Meetings for 9th and 11th grades took place. For 9th grade, the meetings were a chance to get out some energy through various activities such as basketball, cornhole, spikeball, origami, and art. Advisory for 10th and 12th grades gave students an opportunity to catch up with their advisors and play a guessing game.
The Food and Literature class took a trip on Tuesday to Haley House, a nonprofit in Roxbury that works to address food insecurity in a number of ways. On the trip, students learned about nutrition and cooked a delicious meal together (that they ate at the end of the experience). Click here to read more about the Haley House trip!
During G block, a group of 9th grade students participated in a team building exercise led by Ms. González and Head of School Kim Samson. In teams of three, students had to come together to overcome a complex communication barrier and coach a blindfolded team member to find hidden items. Through this experiment, students realized that taking shortcuts in teamwork only hurts the entire team (and that finding Beaver stuffed animals is quite difficult when blindfolded).
On Wednesday, an Upper School meeting full of announcements took place. The Female Activists and Allies Club shared about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and reminded students to wear pink on Friday to support the cause. Beaver Athletics also got a shout out, getting students excited about the (many) games that took place on Wednesday. Project BVR House standings were revealed, with Oxygen in first place with 55 points, Iron in second, and Platinum in third. To finish out the meeting, Mr. Manning shared a few jokes that had the students leaving the meeting with a laugh.
There were no Upper School classes on Thursday due to Fall Parent Teacher Conferences.
On Friday, the Female Activists and Allies Club encouraged students to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
As a female-dominated illness, we as a club decided we wanted to use our club blocks to learn more about spreading awareness for breast cancer, and decided pink out was a great way to allow everyone to participate.
