Scholastic Art Awards

Posted on February 25, 2022

Congratulations to Chris Guerrier ’24 and Felicia Selbst ’23 on winning the Scholastic Arts Award this year.

Chris Guerrier won a Gold Key for his photograph The Portrait. Felicia Selbst won a Gold Key and is an American Visions Nomination for her sculpture Full English Breakfast. While being a fully remote student last year, she took advantage of her resources and decided to learn how to sculpt hot sugar to create highly realistic sculptures of food.

More information about the awards:
Gold Key awards are regional recognitions and are automatically considered for national awards, including Gold Medal, Silver Medal with Distinction, Silver Medal and scholarship awards; these winners will be announced later in March.

American Visions (art) and American Voices (writing) are some of the top honors for the region. As judges are reviewing work, they have the opportunity to nominate art or writing they believe exceeds even the Gold Key standard. After all the judging is complete, a small panel reviewed all the nominations and selected five from art and five from writing.

This means Felicia is one of five art nominations for the state of Massachusetts. These nominees will then be adjudicated at the national level where one from art and one from writing will receive the American Voices/Visions Medals.

Students receiving an American Visions/Voices nomination will receive a separate certificate in the mail indicating this nomination. American Voices/Visions Nominees will also receive a Scholarship of $500.

We are very proud and excited for both Felicia and Chris!

Here’s a followup about these awards. Chris Guerrier won a National Gold Medal for his photograph The Portrait. Less than 2,000 works received a National Medal, which places Chris within the top 1% of all the submissions! Chris joins notable alumni like Stephen King, Charles White, and Andy Warhol, who got their awards as teenagers, so he is now part of that legacy.

The Portrait will be published in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards’ Online Galleries at artandwriting.org starting in June. Chris will also have his name listed in Yearbook 2022, a publication that features works from National Medalists.

Chris will be honored at a ceremony this June in New York City. Congratulations to Chris for this accomplishment.
