Identities in the Curriculum with Dr. Joanna Lee Williams

Posted on October 18, 2021

A look inside the work our faculty is doing to create and foster a diverse and inclusive classroom, community, and Beaver experience.

Dr. Joanna Lee Williams will host small gatherings with Beaver students in December and April to explore their perspectives of life in the Beaver Middle School, and she will share highlights from these conversations with the MS faculty. This will provide another avenue for gathering qualitative feedback from students.

The goals of these conversations

  • Last spring—during a workshop on social networks and identity development—Dr. Williams discussed possible connections between a student’s identity development and exploration and how their identity groups are represented in the curriculum. As part of our ongoing work, we want to explore how various populations are represented in our assignments, activities, lessons, materials, projects, and classroom displays. This will allow us to examine ways we may be influencing our students’ identity development.
