Ms. Xu’s Chinese classes and Ms. Patel’s video and photography classes went on a field trip to Chinatown to learn about the historic neighborhood and take photos of it. First, the students went on a walking tour from the Asian Community Development Corporation around all the historical sights of Chinatown like the Chinatown Gate, Ping On Alley, family associations, One Greenway, and more. After a long tour up and down the streets of Chinatown the group ate a dim sum meal at China Pearl.
Along the trip all the students were assigned objectives to complete. The photography and videography classes had to take photos of people, places, and objects, while being respectful and telling a story about the community of Chinatown.
The Chinese students had to communicate in a polite and culturally appropriate manner when meeting people, talk about the food and how to express gratitude at a dim sum restaurant, use vocabulary about the architecture and city life, and help the photography students communicate politely when asking their subjects if they could take photos of them.
At the end of the tour the group was allowed to explore and complete their objectives while also being able to buy Chinese desserts, candy, and boba tea at the many shops and restaurants in Chinatown.
