MS Minutes: 02.20.24

Posted on February 22, 2024

Hello, Middle School Students and Families! Below is this week’s MS Meeting recap.

Arsema Ayele ’30 and Ava Clark ’30 ran today’s meeting. You can check out the slides from this week’s meeting here.

THE BVR STUDENT

Lila Faye Mandelman ’28 and Naima Russel ’28 presented: acts with honesty, integrity, and sincerity.

Honesty means to speak your mind in a respectful way. Tell the truth because it always ends better for you. Integrity means doing the right thing. For example, if you find a lost item like air pods or an amazing jacket that you might want for yourself, you want to make sure it gets returned to the right person. Sincerity means always meaning what you say and following through with your commitments. For example, if you are talking to a teacher and you say that you will do something by a certain date, you should do that. It’s important to keep your word.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Upper School students Margo Kuznetsova ’27 and Charlie Scott ’27 put together a student survey about D-Level resources and needs; they are collecting data from the middle school.

Ms. Garayua from the Hiatt Center announced the Hiatt Summer Fellowship. Through the fellowship, middle school students receive funding to participate in a summer leadership program of their choice. In addition, the fellowship offers funding for students who volunteer with one of our partner non-profit organizations, or an organization of their choice. Students were encouraged to schedule a meeting with Ms. Garayua at the Hiatt Center to learn more.

Kaz Jurkiewicz ’28, Toren Anderson ’28, and Tariq Kasrawi ’28 recapped the most recent Hiatt Institute, When There’s a Bridge, There’s a Way. With a focus on how to build bridges between people who are in disagreement, students shared how it is important to understand the perspectives of others, make connections on a smaller scale to form connections on big topics and learn when it is best to compromise.

Rishaan Chowdhury ’29 announced this month’s “Guess the Candy in the Jar” winner: Maggie Whitney ’28.

This Thursday, February 22 is our Feed Your Brain Day on campus when students participate in a series of workshops. This day allows Middle School teachers to prepare for conferences while students have enriching learning experiences led by BVR administrators and staff. In the afternoon, we are all going ice skating at Daly Rink in Newton from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

On Thursday, February 29 we are offering a babysitting class and a CPR/AED class for middle school students on the day of conferences.

The babysitting class will cover how to react responsibly to medical emergencies, perform first aid for common childhood injuries, how to best call 911, and how to prevent and relieve choking. Participants will be prepared to interview for a babysitting job, select safe activities for children of different ages, and run their own babysitting business. Participants will leave with a certificate of completion for babysitting, and a First Aid book, and upon successful completion, will also be certified in CPR/AED. That class is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is limited to 12 students. Then there will be an hour-long class from noon to 1 p.m. for just CPR/AED training and certification. That class will also be limited to 12 students.

Click here to sign up; I also emailed the students to sign up. This course is free.

Mr. Egwuatu, BVR’s Chief Engagement and Inclusion Officer, announced HackBAC, a program for 8th through 12th grade BIPOC students to work collaboratively with cross-school teams to create innovative ideas and solutions to build more equitable policies, practices, and programs for environmental sustainability.

The events are in person, March 1-3, with optional virtual events on Monday, February 26 and Wednesday, February 28. BIPOC 8th grade students can find out more by emailing Delonte Egwuatu at degwuatu@bcdschool.org

The 8th grade stayed after the MS Meeting today to hear from next year’s interim Upper School Director Lisa Brown and 9th and 10th grade dean Perry Eaton. They introduced themselves and talked about the visit day on March 28 when 8th graders will visit two Upper School classes as well as attend a luncheon with Upper School students and faculty. The event is designed to give a sneak peek into the Upper School experience.

In addition, we’ll have an event for 8th grade families in April. The Upper School team is looking forward to welcoming the class of 2028 to the Upper School!
