Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—October 31 through November 4 —in the Upper School.
On Monday, Beaver celebrated Halloween. Seniors participated in the annual Senior Halloween parade by showing off their group costumes for the entire Upper School to see. Costumes included the Lorax, inflatable animals, the cast of Breaking Bad, and characters from Sesame Street. To check out more of the Halloween festivities, click here!
Students in Marine Ecology went whale watching on Tuesday to learn more about local marine wildlife. On the trip, over 10 whales were spotted napping, diving, and hanging out in pairs and trios. Students learned more about Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and the various forms of life that are native to the area. Catch a glimpse of the whales and experience here! 
On Wednesday, 10th and 12th graders spent Class Meetings taking a break and evaluating where they are at in the semester. For 12th graders, the occasion was also a chance to celebrate getting past the first round of college application deadlines.
The Theories of Justice class took a field trip to MCI Norfolk on Thursday. At the prison, students heard from speakers and learned more about current programs related to reform and existing issues within the system.
Upper School students attended a presentation about the Alex Cohn Grant. Ben Litvak Hinenzon ’23 and Thai Davis ’23, the 2022 grant winners, spoke about their projects. Ben’s project, “Tiny Farm, Big Impact,” involved constructing a chicken coop, planting a garden, and implementing an automatic watering system. He hopes to create a website to serve as a hub for the project. Thai’s project involved creating a veggie vehicle, an automobile converted to run on vegetable oil. The benefits of using vegetable oil include combating waste, being CO2 neutral, and (in Thai’s words) smelling like french fries. The project included digging through research, finding a vehicle, and securing parts for the build.
The application for the 2023 Alex Cohn Grant was made available after the US Meeting on Thursday. If interested, students should get in touch with Mr. Eaton and Ms. Ching, faculty advisors to the grant.
On Friday, students involved in the Fall play, Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood, stayed late after school working on the production. With less than a week until opening night, the excitement for the production is ramping up! Click here to learn more.
