Hello, Middle School Students and Families! Here’s what happened at today’s MS meeting:

Lily Roetter ’28 and Kylie Marcus ’28 ran today’s meeting. You can check out the slides from this week’s meeting here.

The WEEKLY FEATURES

BVR STUDENT HIGHLIGHT

At Middle School meetings throughout the year, students present elements of The BVR Student.

Today, Harrison Mrazek ’28 presented Tries New Things.

“To me, this means: to try new ideas or activities in order to find out what results they will have. It is important to me because if you don’t try new things you might never fail. If you’re not failing then you won’t be able to learn from your mistakes. I encourage you to think about not being scared of failure and always striving to try new things.”

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT

Evan Pozen ’27 shared that a couple of weeks ago in an advisory we did an activity about belonging. Students made commitments to help our community be a place where everyone feels like they belong. Below are some of the commitments students shared.

Kiernan Collins ’27: “Helping each other to all feel like we belong here is important to our community.”

Phoebe Stoesser ’27: “Feeling like we belong at Beaver means our school feels safe, welcoming, and supportive to anyone and everyone. I am going to commit to accepting people for who they are.”

Layla Slocum ’28: “I am going to give people compliments in the hallway.”

Allie Martin ’27: “I am going to say hi when I walk by my classmates and teachers in the hallway.”

Jackie Horvitz ’27: “I am going to include others.”

Cassie Scott ’28: “I am going to help people and invite people to sit with me.”

Andrew Adamic ’27 recapped yesterday’s Hiatt Leadership Institute. Students who attended learned about the qualities a change maker needs to have to bring about change. They also made keychains honoring the people in their lives who have helped them become better leaders.

El Strom ’27 congratulated the new Student Council grade representatives and announced the first Student Council meeting at lunch today.

8th grade president: Andrew Adamic
8th grade vice president: El Strom
8th grade representative: Ruby Nielsen
7th grade representatives: Reid Bugbee and Toby Marsh
6th grade representatives: Rishaan Chowdhury and Maddy SaCouto

William Mortimer ’28 announced the first Beaver Lego League. He explained the program and encouraged Middle School students to sign up. They will meet Tuesdays after school from 4–5:30 p.m. Students who are interested can email Amber Kuntz or Ann Bevan Hollos.

First Lego League is a competition that focuses on scientific and real-world challenges. One important part of the competition involves building and programming a Lego robot to complete tasks or missions on a large game board or table. The other part of the competition is to come up with a solution to a real-world problem. This season’s theme is energy. Teams will be exploring where energy comes from and how it is distributed, stored, and used to be able to innovate for a better future. We will start building the robot and learning about energy at the start of next school year.”

The art gallery on campus is currently featuring work done by Beaver faculty and staff. Middle School faculty who have work on display are Amber Kuntz, Sara Kelley-Mudie, Nate Guevin, Joe Christy, and Ann Bevan Hollos.

Ms. Smith announced the Student Body Advisory Council (SBAC). Students can apply to be a part of this group that meets monthly with Middle School administrators and other school leaders. An application was emailed to students today to apply.

Next Thursday, October 13 is our Feed Your Brain Day on campus. Students will sign up this Thursday to participate in a series of workshops. This day allows Middle School teachers to prepare for conferences while students have enriching learning experiences led by BVR administrators and staff.

Middle School students who participated in the Hiatt Summer Fellowship program (see the overview of the program here) spoke about their experiences including what they did every day, their favorite part of their fellowship, and their biggest take-away.
