Annual Report: Prioritizing our Endowment

Posted on July 1, 2022

Endowments help sustain the programs that will always represent the values of a school. For Beaver, whose endowment is now at $20M, this is a new priority. Our endowment income contributes a planned percentage of funds to the operating budget to support specific core priorities.

From 2020 to 2022, BVR100 secured more than $5.7M of new endowment for Tuition Assistance, Partnerships, and the Hutton Explore Fund.

Generous support is the best validation of our mission and vision. Beaver is so fortunate to have gifts to build the endowment in celebration of Beaver’s Centennial. We are very proud to have the framework established for our community to demonstrate their commitment to sustaining the programs that make Beaver, Beaver.

Our Tuition Assistance program provides our school leaders the opportunity to assemble an incredible community of engaged learners from the Boston area —and beyond. When there is a diversity of voices at the table and respect for one another, we can truly begin to solve the most challenging problems.

It is amazing that Beaver is now at a place in its growth where it can begin to build an endowment for tuition assistance. Members of our parent, alumni, and friend communities proudly share resources that allow us to provide financial awards to families who might not otherwise be able to afford them. One thing that I think makes BVR special is that we have a community where everyone is welcome and appreciated. It is the same for our supporters—whether they are committing a gift of endowment, fully funding a student’s experience, or giving generously to the Annual Fund. Thanks to our donors, financial awards are given to 26% of our student body. We hope to grow that percentage even more through philanthropic investments. — Director of Enrollment Management Shamikhah Baker P’24 ’29

Our partnerships allow students to further pursue their interests—and take them to the next level. Below, Art and Paula Rabe—parents of Logan Rabe ’22—talk about how our partnerships helped Logan grow as a student and as a person.

Beaver was an amazing experience for our son Logan, and for us. We watched Logan enter 7th grade with an interest in politics and history, and six years later, graduate with a resume of related activities. Beaver empowered him. He made the most of his opportunities, and he learned.

Logan took advantage of Beaver’s program offerings and when he had an idea for a program that Beaver didn’t yet offer, he was encouraged to create it for himself. In the Upper School, Logan secured a faculty advisor and launched the History Bowl Club which earned a spot at Nationals in 2020 (JV), 2021 (Varsity), and 2022 (Varsity). He also qualified individually for the National Political Science Bee at the same event and placed 15th in 2020 (JV), 8th in 2021(Varsity), and 6th in 2022 (Varsity).

Logan enjoyed two Hiatt internships, one with a Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign, and one with a political group focused on education reform. As a sophomore, he presided over a panel discussion between candidates in the 4th District Congressional race – which Beaver hosted for the entire student body. As a senior, he was a special delegate to the Massachusetts Democratic Convention. A big highlight for us was observing the deep learning Logan experienced through a four-trimester-long student-directed project in polling and data visualization/forecasting for the 2020 presidential election. In that work, he partnered with faculty, engaged with outside experts, and made valuable connections. This is what school should be.

We want to make sure that this culture of exploration in and out of the classroom is possible for all Beaver students, now and in the future. It is such an important part of understanding who you are and who you have the potential to be. — Paula and Art Rabe P’22

More examples of endowed funds that directly benefit the student experience:

  • The impact of the Alex Cohn Grant Fund, which makes an annual grant available for students to pursue a special project.
  • In February 2022, Beaver featured an Angela Lorenz art show that was made possible by the Nancy Lincoln ‘61 Fund, which honored the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
