Weekly Athletics Write-Up 1/20/15

Girls Varsity Ice Hockey – 

The Girls Varsity Ice Hockey team had a history making weekend with two incredibly hard-fought games. The team started the weekend travelling to Pingree School Friday afternoon to play a team that has been a league leader for many years. The girls started out with a scoreless first period before Pingree opened up the game with 3 goals in the second. The team held off any other scoring chances, and Vida Bailey ’17 had a 30 save performance in a 3-0 loss. The following day, the team faced off in a much anticipated rematch with Dana Hall. After a last minute loss last week, the girls were ready for a tough game. Beaver took a 4-0 lead to start the game with goals by Corinne Downey ’18, Claire Mills ’15, Julia Gatewood ’18, and Remi Shore ’16.  Molly Honan ’17 added a goal in the second period as Dana Hall began a comeback. With four minutes to go in the third period, Sydney Brown ’17 scored to put the game out of reach for Dana Hall. Vida Bailey had 24 saves in a 6-4 victory over Dana Hall. This victory marks the first varsity win for the Girls Ice Hockey program.

Varsity Fencing –

The Beaver Fencing team traveled to Concord Carlisle High School on Saturday, to compete in the CCHS Invitational. Four Beaver Fencers advanced into the final round in their respective competitions. Jack Duval ’18 finished up 4th in men’s sabre, and senior Kathryn Chinetti ’15 finished 5th in women’s sabre. Becca Barnes ’18 climbed atop the podium, taking 1st in women’s epee, while Cam Mayer ’15 took 1st in men’s foil. This week the team will host BB&N on Tuesday, January 20th, and then travel to Dana Hall on Friday to compete against Dana Hall and St. John’s.

Girls Varsity Basketball –

The Girls Varsity Basketball team finished their tough week with a 2-1 record. It was a week filled with quality competition beginning with EIL opponent Winsor on Wednesday. Beaver won 46-33, and extended their winning ways vs. ISL team St. Marks in a defensive battle 34-26 on Friday. The girls traveled to Governors to face a strong balanced team on Saturday, and lost 60-49. This week the team will host Lexington Christian Academy on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

Boys Varsity Basketball –

The Beaver Boys Basketball team went  into this past week with a tough schedule, playing Class A Tabor Academy, without their starting back court. The team put on a great effort in the first half leading 36-33. The lack of depth proved to be too much in the 2nd half, as Tabor pulled away with a 77-63 victory. On Saturday, Beaver faced one of the top teams in Class B, Brooks, and came away with a 44-42 victory in overtime. The team was bolstered by the return of junior Keyshaun Jacobs to the lineup. The Boys will have a week off from playing and return to EIL play on January 26th at Lexington Christian Academy.

Varsity Wrestling –

The Beaver Varsity Wrestling team hosted a rematch against EIL competitors Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall and Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday. After a slow start against Portsmouth Abbey, the Beaver squad became electric and could not be slowed down against CHCH.  Hudson Roddy ’18 started things off by going back and forth with his more experienced opposition. Roddy ended up outlasting his opponent and winning by fall in the middle of the second period. Next, Ben Campbell ’18 outworked his opponent well into the third period of his match, and came away with a win via an 8-5 decision. Also recording varsity wins on the day were co-captains Ben Snyder ’17 at 138 lbs and Dan McDonald ’15 at 145 lbs. Jacob Weil ’17 at 132 lbs, also came away with a win in a thrilling exhibition match. Beaver’s next match is on 1/28 at Concord Academy against the host team and Maimonides.
