Beaver at the 18th Annual Model United Nations conference

Posted on November 14, 2014

Last week, 12 Beaver students boarded a bus to attend the Brown’s 18th annual Model United Nations conference, which took place at Brown’s historic campus in Providence.

Although chilly outside, the temperature rose quickly in the conference rooms as our students discussed and negotiated in GA committees about various topics such as human trafficking, exploitation of migrant workers, and increasing the role of women in governance.

Students also participated in Historical and Specialized committees: Communist party of Yugoslavia, Algerian Peace Negotiations, Nepali Constituent Assembly as well as the Third Vatican Council. Two of our experienced delegates participated in Crisis Committees: Argentinian Secretaría de Inteligencia and British Royal African Company.

They wrote position papers, drafted and presented resolutions, and spent three days negotiating, debating and writing resolutions and directives with students from schools around the country.

All in all, our delegates learned about the art of compromise to further their ideals and principles, and to solve crises.

Four of our delegates won individual awards:

Drew Siegal ‘18 won an award for commendation in the African Union Committee,
Ryan McClennen ‘18 won Outstanding Delegate in ECOFIN (Economic and Financial Committee),
Marcia Zimmerman ‘15 won Outstanding Delegate in Algerian Peace Negotiations and
Dimitrius Keeler ’15 won Best Delegate in the Crisis Committee (Argentinian Secretaría de Inteligencía).
