Varsity Baseball
Beaver’s Varsity Baseball lost a tough one to Bancroft this past week leveling their record at 1-1 for the season. Max Steinberg ended his streak (starting at the first at bat of the first game) of getting on base with his 6th plate appearance of the season. Steven Guerrero hit a long triple to lead off the 4th inning followed by a single by Liam Moreno giving him his 3rd RBI of the season. Ben Lewis knocked in his first RBI of the season plating Moreno in the 4th. Beaver’s Varsity Baseball plays next Wednesday, April 16th @ Concord Academy (game time 4:00 p.m.).
Varsity Softball
The Girl’s varsity softball team had a difficult start to the season this past week. The team had two tough loses to both Dana Hall and Pingree School while on the road. Arielle Silbersweig ’14 had 5 great catches in center field during the Pingree game. The team is looking forward to the weeks to come, as they continue to build their skills.
Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse
After a rainy start to the spring, the Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Team was excited to be playing outside last week. The Boys had a scrimmage against Boston Trinity Academy, where they won 17 – 3, and a game at Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday, where they lost 19 – 4. Against Boston Trinity nine different players scored goals, and seven different players had an assist. Mark Little ’14, Ben Hicks ’14, Tyler DeLuca ’14, and Justin Calka ’17 each scored a goal. Jimmy Bell ’15 and Noah Zakarian ’17 each had two goals. Captain Nat Brown ’15, Grady Newberg ’15, and captain John Kalnins ’14 all had three goals each. Against Portsmouth Abbey, Noah Zakarian ’17 scored a goal while captain Nat Brown ’15 had two assists and captain John Kalnins ’14 scored three goals. The team is off until they play on 4/17 at Landmark.
Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse
The Beaver Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse team played their season opener at Worcester Academy on Friday April 4th. Although the team got off to a slow start, the pace picked up significantly during the second half when the team scored 5 more goals to finish the game 6-10. Sophomores Justine Hatton and Sydney Brown led the team with 2 goals each. Junior Adut Ayuel led the offense with 1 goal and 2 assists. Senior Captain Riley Nelson won 5 draw controls, causing Beaver to gain possession of the ball. The defense until played well together and first-year student Kat Green made significant saves in goal. One save led to a particularly nice transition, ending in a goal by Sydney Brown. This highlighted the potential of the team to work together towards success. Everyone played a significant role in the positive outcome of the second half.
Boys’ Varsity Tennis
Boys’ Varsity Tennis saw its first rays of sunshine of the season. After various practices solidifying the singles lineup, our boys took on Gann Academy, an up-and-coming team out of Waltham. Between audacious gusts of wind, our players battled to make up for a couple of early losses at #2 and #3 singles (Gabe Belkind and Marc Davis, respectively). First-time pair William French and Brendan Chamoun notched Beaver’s first win of the season at #2 doubles, while Noah Hyatt and Joey Steinberg battled into a 3rd-set tiebreaker before taking down Gann’s #1 doubles crew. As the sun settled onto the horizon, Hunter Flint’s #1 singles match extended as long as the shadows crossing into play. Hunter’s opponent, Ilan Belkind (Gabe Belkind’s older brother), after losing the first set, brought his best tennis, playing an aggressive all-court game that put Hunter back on his heels in the second set, 3-5. The turning point for Hunter came in the form of three big first serves, shaking Ilan’s confidence. From then on, Hunter surged to victory (6-2, 7-5) earning the honored “game ball” from co-captain Gabe Belkind and cementing Beaver’s first win of the season.
Girls’ Varsity Tennis
After a good warm-up match against Nobles, the girls varsity tennis team started their league matches with a great win against last year’s EIL Champion, Bancroft. With two solid comeback wins by Hayley Zukerberg and Catherine Wei, the team finished with a clean sweep of all five matches. In a very young season, the team showed a great deal of poise and confidence. The team is now looking ahead at avenging one of their only losses from last season, against Concord on Wednesday, April 16.
Ultimate Frisbee
The Beaver Ultimate team had a busy a week with three games. While team lost the opening games, they competed hard and showed improved play in each contest. This week, the team does not have any games.
