Beaver Cares
Announcing the launch of the Beaver Cares, a new initiative to provide support to Beaver community members, including students, families, faculty, and staff, who may be experiencing a challenging period, such as an injury, illness, or loss. A small group of experienced parents are available to coordinate various means of support (e.g., transportation, meals, errand running, providing resources, etc.).
For additional information, or if you have resources you would like to share with the Beaver Cares group, or if you might like assistance please contact beavercares@bcdschool.org. Discretion and confidentiality will be honored.

Social Media Boot Camp for Parents

Doreen Nicastro, social media expert and author of “Have You Googled Your Child’s Name?” who presented for Beaver parents in spring 2012, is returning to update us on the constantly evolving social media landscape that our children inhabit. Doreen works with individual clients, large and small businesses and non-profit organizations on Internet strategy, engagement marketing, social campaigns and information technology initiatives. She also works with and advises schools on social networking and social engagement.
Doreen’s objective is to de-mystify the social media landscape for parents, helping them to better understand and navigate the digital world their children inhabit. Doreen will provide information about social media sites, resources and tools, and strategies for how parents can engage their children in discussions about the use of social media and technology.
Parent Conversations: Social Media

Doreen’s presentation will be followed by a Parent Conversations gathering in which parents can engage in conversations about how to use the information and implement the strategies presented in Social Media Boot Camp for Parents. Parents will gather in groups appropriate to their students’ ages to share strategies, delve more deeply into resources and tools, and ask specific questions. We hope you will be able to join us for both presentations, but coming to either one is encouraged.

How do parents negotiate the college search process with less stress for both parents and students? How do you know your student is looking at the right schools? A well-rounded student or specialized student? Yes, it is that time of the year again—the college search process! Deans and Directors of Admission from four diverse institutions will lead this engaging and important discussion. This meeting is open to all parents of children who attend PIN member schools and staff of College Counseling offices of member schools.

About the Parents’ Independent School Network (PIN): PIN is a volunteer group of parents whose children attend New England area private schools, and was formed as a way for parents to share ideas and promote worthy programs at our schools. Beaver was one of the founding members of PIN, which today is comprised of representatives from 60+ schools. Parents of member schools can attend speaker events, access past lectures, etc. and participate in monthly webinars on a broad range of topics. There are two divisions to ensure age appropriate topics: Lower/Middle School and Upper School. PIN also offers community service grants and recognition awards for community service projects undertaken by PIN member schools. This year’s Beaver PIN representatives are Mary Jane Devins, Kim Zukerberg, Laura Bailey, and Tracy Simko. Click here for more information, including passwords to log into www.pin-inc.org.
