Earlier this year, the Beaver Country Day School Girls’ Varsity Basketball coach Sherry Levin was named head coach of the USA Jr. Girls Basketball team. The team recently returned home from competing in the 19th World Maccabiah Games held in Israel in July, gold medal in hand.
“I could not be more proud of the performance of the USA Jr. Girls Basketball team. Winning the Gold Medal was a result of their hard work, dedication and unselfish team work. On the court it was amazing to see them come together and execute the game plan against Australia, Canada and Israel. We were fortunate to have high level talent who dominated the competition, including a player who will play at USC.””Off the court, we all experienced the wonders of Israel along with the meaningful connections to our heritage that made this Maccabiah Games a lifetime to remember. Seeing athletes from Italy, Cuba, Russia, and even Gibraltar, made me realize just how deep our connections go.”
Beaver junior Marcia Zimmerman ’15, was the manager of the team.
“Experiencing the Maccabiah with Marcia made it more meaningful. I was fortunate to play during my career so it was not my first experience, but sharing it with her and helping to guide these 12 young players was an amazing opportunity.”
The World Maccabiah Games is the 3rd largest International sporting event which began in 1932. The unbroken chain of Maccabiah Games was started in 1953 and has continued every four years. Often referred to as the “Jewish Olympics”, over 9,000 athletes competed from 82 Countries.
