Girls’ Varsity Tennis
The Girls Varsity Tennis team got back to their winning ways this past week. On Wednesday, the team was finally back to full strength, for the first time in two weeks. Despite being a little rusty, they played a very tight match against Portsmouth Abbey (3-2). The second doubles team of Joanna Pride and Rachel Feldman, sealed the victory in the final match of the day, winning 6-3, 6-0. By the end of the week, the whole team was playing better and looked very strong against Dana Hall. Beginning with the three singles matches, Gabby Marks, Electra Walker and Hayley Zukerberg dominated their opponents, with each of them giving up three games or less in their matches. The doubles teams of Mandy Gordon/ Catherine Wei and Joanna Pride/ Rachel Feldman each took their matches to the third set tiebreaker. Mandy and Catherine took the lead early and never looked back, while Joanna and Rachel fought off two match points, but in the end they fell short. Nonetheless, it was a great way to end the week, and bring their record to 4-1 (3-1 in the league). This week, the team will be using two non-league matches – Brimmer and May (Tuesday), Gann (Wednesday) – to sharpen their skills and prepare for their next big match against Winsor, who is currently undefeated in the league.
Boys’ Varsity Tennis
Beaver Tennis had a busy week with matches Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Monday’s away match against Pingree came down to a strong Singles performance from all three starters. Jon Marsh, Hunter Flint and Gabe Belkind-Gerson notched relatively easy wins to give Beaver the victory, 3-2. Wednesday’s away match brought the squad to Portsmouth Abbey, whose infamous Rhode Island trade winds wreaked havoc on play. Portsmouth’s unique brand of slice and dice tennis proved a winning strategy. Beaver’s only win came at #2 singles; Hunter Flint played aggressively to cement a 6-4, 7-5 victory. On Friday, Beaver gutted out a fantastic victory against Bancroft. Senior Henry Floyd notched his first victory as a Varsity player, teaming up with the rambunctious Marc Davis in a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 10-8 victory. Jon Marsh had an equally taxing 3-set battle with Bancroft’s number one. He prevailed 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse
The Beaver Boys Lacrosse program faced a difficult task this past week with two very tough opponents in the ISL’s Lawrence Academy on Monday and EIL powerhouse Pingree on Wednesday. The Beaver squad struggled in both games to maintain a consistent offensive presence by moving the ball and capitalizing when the opportunity arose. With limited time of possession and ineffective offensive threats, Beaver found themselves trailing in both games and were never able to right the ship. On Monday, the team will look to even their season record at .500 when they take on EIL opponent Lexington Christian Academy.
Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse
The Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse team faced two tough opponents in Pingree and Dana Hall last week. The girls fought hard, but saw their record slip to 0-5. Junior Captain Caroline Hill continued to be the team’s high scorer, contributing 2 goals against Pingree and 3 against Dana Hall. Senior Mackenzie Mills played exemplary defense, stopping multiple fast breaks without drawing a single penalty in both games. Juniors Riley Nelson and Amani Hayers-Messinger also contributed goals in both games. Sophomore Lina Sullivan contributed 2 goals against Dana Hall, one of which was assisted by Sophomore Adut Ayuel. Hannah Goldstein and Isabel Meltzer both demonstrated team leadership by playing in goal. This week, the team will be busy with three league games.
Ultimate Frisbee
The Beaver Varsity Ultimate Squad recorded their first win of the season with an impressive 15-1 victory over CSW. Captains Abe Hyatt and Abe Gobel were very effective disc handlers and field generals in the win. They impressively moved the disc up and down the field, and helped to lead the team to victory. Rising young stars Noah Saldana, Gerlins Marcano, and Sam Glenn defended well, and were pivotal in the win. On Friday the team fell to an experienced and skilled team from Pingree. This week, the team looks forward to getting back in action against BU Academy and Cambridge School of Weston.
Varsity Baseball
The Boys’ Varsity Baseball team exploded for 16 runs, offensively, on the shoulders of junior Steven Guererro and his super hot bat. Steven went 5 for 5 with 3 doubles and 5 RBI’s as the Beaver baseball squad rolled on to a 16-6 victory over Gann Academy. On Friday, the boys came up short against a strong Portsmouth Abbey team. This week, the Beaver team will be on the road for games against Newman Prep and Pingree.
Varsity Softball
The Softball team had a busy week with games on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The girls fell to Woodward Academy and Berwick, before bouncing back against Wheeler on Friday. The bats came alive in the week’s final game, as the team scored a season high 23 runs. This week, the softball team will be in action 3 times with games against Pingree (at home on Monday), Concord Academy ( away on Wednesday), and Winsor (at home on Friday).
