Baseball
The Beaver 9 finished up their 2012 campaign on a high note winning two of their last three games in the final week of the season. They traveled to Beverly on Thursday where they got 7 solid innings out of junior right hander Henry Floyd and two triples from freshman Henry Hirshland to slip by the Landmark Vikings 6-5. Friday afternoon marked the last home game of senior Connor Laubenstein’s career and this senior day did not disappoint. Paced by freshman Jordan Scurry’s monster 9 inning, 145 pitch outing, Beaver out-dueled the Pingree Highlanders 6-5 in 10 innings. After spotting Pingree a 5-0 lead after 4 innings, the Beaver 9 rallied back to tie the game at 5. The game would continue to extra innings when, in the bottom of the 10th, Laubenstein hit a walk off single that plated freshman Jamie Kennedy to hand the Highlanders their first league loss of the season and deny them the outright Eastern Independent League Championship. Saturday, the team fell 6-4 in the first round to EIL Pool B tournament host Bancroft.

Softball
This past week, the varsity softball team played one game against a powerful Newton Country Day School team. The girls ended the season with a 12-1 loss at the hands of NCD.

Boys Lacrosse
The boys varsity lacrosse team wrapped up the final week of the season with three competitions against tough EIL opponents. On Monday the team traveled to Rhode Island and took on #1 ranked Portsmouth Abbey. From the first whistle the home team flexed their muscle and controlled the majority of the game, eventually winning in impressive fashion.

On Wednesday, Beaver traveled north to Landmark in a rematch of a game earlier this season when the Beaver squad took care of business on their home field. After a slow start, Beaver made a run to bring the score to within four goals at the end of the first half. With momentum on their side Beaver managed to capitalize on their offensive pressure and limited Landmark’s chances. By the final whistle Beaver had managed to tip the scales in their favor and secured one of the best comeback wins in team history with a 16-14 road victory.

On Saturday, Beaver played its final game of the season against a tough Berwick team from southern Maine. The half time score of 4-3 was representative of the hard fought game it was. In a game of scoring runs, Berwick found the back of the cage in the opening minutes of the second half and Beaver found themselves playing catch up the remainder of the game. On senior day, Beaver’s oldest team members played with grit and determination but found themselves on the short end of the score at the end of 48 minutes of lacrosse.

The young Beaver program looks poised to compete for many years to come in the Eastern Independent League.

Girls Lacrosse
The girls’ lacrosse team played two tough match-ups this past week, facing Newton Country Day on Monday and Lexington Christian Academy on Wednesday. NCD managed a fast lead scoring 11 goals within the first half. Beaver held their opponent to 4 goals in the second half and finished the game with a 15-8 loss. Junior Captain Tess Anderson led the team with 4 goals and 2 assists. The game on Wednesday against LCA ended in a 11-10 nail-biting win. Anderson scored 6 goals and contributed 1 assist. She scored the last two goals of the game, securing the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Hartman made 3 key saves towards the end of the game which kept LCA at bay. Each of the graduating seniors (Senior Captain Carly Furr, Jordan Schechter, and Lili Welch) scored at least one goal during their last home game.

Boys Tennis
The Beaver tennis team hoisted another EIL banner this Thursday with 5-0 wins over Pingree and Concord. TJ Moor and Kris Bronner cruised at #1 and #2 singles and Adam Goodman/Gabe Belkind made quick work at #2 doubles. Pingree put up a fight in the middle of the lineup on Wednesday. After a two hour epic battle, Jay Rodman secured a victory at #3 singles in a 3rd set tiebreaker, while Jon Marsh and Hunter Flint were also pushed to the limit against a strong Pingree #1 doubles team.

On Thursday Beaver took on undefeated Concord Academy in a match that would determine the EIL Champion. Beaver saved their best tennis for last, sweeping all 5 matches in straight sets. Notably, TJ Moor remained undefeated this season at #1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Kris Bronner’s 6-0, 6-0 win officially made him undefeated in his entire EIL career at #2 singles. Jay Rodman’s win at #3 singles also capped off an undefeated season for him at #3 singles.

Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team had its busiest week of the season this past week. The team finished its remarkable regular season with an 12-1 record. The week started with a nice win against Pingree (4-1), and then the team prepared for its biggest match of the season against Newton Country Day School, on Senior Day. Both teams entered the day with undefeated records and knew that the league championship hung in the balance. Beaver started off with a big win at #1 singles, but Newton proved to be the stronger team at #2 and 3 singles. The match came down to the two doubles teams and both matches went three sets. Unfortunately, Beaver was unable to win both matches and lost 3-2 to the defending champions of the EIL. Despite the emotional loss and exhaustion, the team collected itself and traveled to Berwick the next day. They bounced back nicely and won 4-1 against a team that they beaten 3-2 the week before. The win was an amazing demonstration of the team’s character and determination. After playing three matches in three days, the team quickly prepared itself for the EIL tournament on Saturday. They lost the first match of the day to Portsmouth Abbey, and then bounced back again to beat Winsor for third place in the tournament. The girls are now preparing for a run at the New England championship next Saturday at Loomis Chaffee. The team enters the tournament as the number one seed and is looking forward to the opportunity to win a championship banner.

Ultimate Frisbee
The Beaver Ultimate Frisbee team concluded its season with one game this past week. The team hosted Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall on Wednesday and fell by a score of 11-7.
