Upper School Musical, Urinetown

Saturday, May 19, 2:30 p.m.
Bradley Hall
Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire about a town in which the water supply is controlled by a greedy corporation. Inspired by the political theater of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown invites it’s audience to think critically about social injustice and exploitation and to move towards social change.
Urinetown premiered at the Fringe Festival in 1999 before transferring to Broadway in 2001. It is the first musical to achieve this feat. Critically acclaimed, it was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and it won the awards for Best Book, Best Book, Best Original Score and Best Direction.
Tickets: $10, Available online May 7 at www.bvrdevelopment.wpengine.com/tickets, at lunch the week of May 14, and at the door.

What inspires a person to take a stand? How do you define citizenship? How do you define “right” and “wrong”? Using the classic Greek tragedy Antigone by Sophocles as a starting point, the ensemble will explore these issues and how they relate to their lives today. This classic tale of a young girl standing up to the king to save the honor of her brother is the culmination of the middle school drama season.
