Athletic Accolades Go to Boys’ Varsity Basketball, Ramao, and Spellman

As the winter sports season winds down, there are many performances worthy of an Athletic Accolade. This week’s honors go to the boys’ varsity basketball team, Ramon Ramao ’11 (wrestling), and Jeff Spellman ’14 (MS boys’ A basketball).

“Selecting an Athletic Accolade from all our exceptional results has become increasingly difficult,” said Sherry Levin, Director of Athletics. “With their win over Portsmouth Abbey on February 24th, the boys’ varsity basketball team captured the EIL Regular Season title outright — a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since 2001-02. The future looks bright for continued success in basketball with highly-skilled players like Jeff Spellman ’14 who received an accolade as a member of the 14-2 MS boys’ A basketball team.”

Ramon Romao was the best wrestler at 119 pounds in the EIL Championships on Thursday February 11th, pinning his way through the finals. On Saturday, February 20th, Ramon had a great showing at the NEPSAC Tournament. Coming in as the ninth seed in his weight class, he lost a close match to the eighth seed in the first round. Despite the setback, Ramon preceded to win four straight consolation matches, and secured a place on the medal stand as the fourth place finisher in all of New England.

“Ramon has worked so hard, and this is a great achievement for him in his long line of awards,” says head wrestling coach Josh Rosenthal. “He has made his teammates, coaches, and the school very proud.” Ramon will represent Beaver Country Day School this weekend at the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh College in PA.
