MS Minutes: 01.30.24

Hello, Middle School Students and Families! Below is this week’s MS Meeting recap.

Tariq Kasrawi ’28 and Joe Murphy ’28 ran today’s meeting. You can check out the slides from this week’s meeting here.

THE BVR STUDENT

Taylor Andrews ’29 presented: Collaborates Positively and Productively.

This is an important part of BVR—working with partners and in groups. You need to use your time wisely to get things done so that you don’t get invited to R-TIME so you can use your R-TIME to do other things that you need to do. It’s important to be positive so you can be a good team member. If you’re positive, you will make people feel happy.

FEED YOUR BRAIN BOOK BUFFET

Ground Zero by Alan Gratz

Recommended by Caroline Coe-Rohl ’30

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK …
I liked the book because it taught me a lot about 911 that I didn’t know before, it put me in other people’s shoes, and I felt like I was in the story.

WHY I THINK YOU WOULD LIKE IT …
I think you will like it because it switches off the perspectives and the author did a great job finding ways to link Reshmina’s and Brandon’s experiences.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Social Justice Retreat last Friday was a huge success! Rishaan Chowdhury ’29, Alexandra Natan ’29, Rafay Desautels ’29, Jasper Ingenthron ’29, Caden Salzano ’28, Natalie Moniz ’29, and Eka Krishnan ‘29 talked about highlights from Friday’s programming.

I liked the bridge project where I took parts of my identity and put it into a poem.

We liked drawing with Bren Bataclan. He has a unique style of painting, and it was cool to hear about how his art travels around the world.

I liked learning about filter bubbles. I had never heard of them before.

We still have space for students to sign up to attend the AISNE Middle School Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Conference happening this Saturday, February 3 at the Park School. Middle School students are encouraged to attend. Ms. Garayua talked about the amazing lineup of speakers.

Students were reminded to submit a film to the film festival. We watched a movie made by last year’s 8th graders that won Best Picture in the 2023 Film Festival.

  • The theme for this year’s festival is nostalgia.
  • Videos should be three and a half minutes or shorter.
  • The deadline for submissions is February 13.

Eight 8th grade choral students are singing in the US concert tonight!

  • Toren Andersen
  • K.L. Benjamin
  • Katie Born
  • Reid Bugbee

Everyone is welcome to attend! It’s at 7 p.m. in Bradley Hall and there will be sweet treats following the concert.

The 8th grade advisories have been working on a small project called Sharing the Wisdom. 8th grade students feel they have some wisdom to share as they are in their last and final year of middle school. For the next several weeks, each 8th grade advisory will present on a different topic ranging from friend conflicts to time management.

Today, Mr. Derisier’s advisory presented Time Management. Lawrence Rosembert, Kiki Peguero, Misti Birnbaum, Machaias Weir Lytle, and Natalie Lippman recommended the use of a to-do list including due dates, not procrastinating, taking breaks when working, and prioritizing work.

Spring afternoon activities are now in PowerSchool. Students are encouraged to look to see what afternoon activity they were assigned. Spring Afternoon activities start in three weeks on February 20.

We reminded students about a BVR Way: Students on campus after 4:00 p.m. must be in room 105.
