US Weekly Wrap-Up: 10.20.23

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—October 16 through October 20 —in the Upper School.

Students kicked off the week with Advisory on Monday. Advisory time this week was dedicated to ensuring students could meet with their advisors one-on-one to check in about the upcoming weeks.

BEE founders Reid Sullivan, Nayan Brainerd-Ghosh, and Reya Schmidt

In addition to Club Block on Tuesday, many students found time to work on projects outside of their classes. One group of seniors spent time working on BEE, a new peer mentorship program designed to pair upperclassmen with students in grades 9 and 10 for help on schoolwork. You can read more about BEE (and apply!) here.

On Wednesday, each grade spent their class meeting with a different activity. In 9th grade, class representative candidates gave speeches to their peers. The speeches covered each candidates’ leadership skills, what they have accomplished at Beaver, and what they plan to do if elected to the position.

Students decorating Ms. Brown’s door

In 10th grade, the Halloween spirit was in the air as students decorated the advisor’s doors with cobwebs, pumpkins, twinkling lights, and art. The doors will remain decorated throughout the month!

11th and 12th graders spent class meeting time relaxing, with 11th graders enjoying time outside and 12th graders having a quiet moment of meditation in the Rogers Room.

Actors from Radium Girls on a zoom conference with the playwright of the show, D.W. Gregory

Actors in the upcoming fall play Radium Girls met with playwright D.W. Gregory to chat about the show, their characters, and Gregory’s career. Students left the meeting with a much deeper understanding of not only the show, but also the rich history behind the play itself. You can read more about the fall play here.

On Friday, the BVR-X course The Art of Navigating Life went on a field trip to a laundromat to practice practical home-maintenance skills. The trip allowed students to pick up another valuable life skill necessary for college and adult life, adding to the financial and interview skills developed in previous weeks.

Student ambassadors for Morgan’s Message partnered with the Mental Health Awareness and Psychology clubs to raise awareness around mental health–particularly in athletics–at a varsity boys soccer game against Wheeler. Hear more in the video below!
