US Weekly Wrap-Up: 06.02.23

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—May 29 through June 2 —in the Upper School.

There were no classes on Monday in observation of Memorial Day.

On Tuesday, the Learning by Doing Showcase took place in the afternoon. The showcase was designed as a chance to celebrate the work done by students who completed a student-directed project this year and to see their work. All students that completed an SDP were invited to the showcase.

The second-to-last class meetings of the school year took place on Wednesday. Class Advisors took the opportunity to share their reflections on the year and offer advice. In addition to this, students running for leadership positions made speeches to their classmates before they cast their votes.

Mixed Media and Studio Practice classes took a field trip to the ICA. Students toured pieces by Simone Leigh, an American artist whose work is concerned with the marginalization of women of color. Following this, the classes took a water taxi to visit the ICA Watershed to view an instillation by Guadaloupe Maravilla.

On Thursday, seniors got together for a night at Fenway Park (Red Sox won!). The game marked one of the last senior events of the year before commencement on Friday, June 9.

Seniors were back on campus on Friday for Advisory, workshops, and a final discussion about their Senior Experiences. They finished the day at Beaver by attending the Heliconian launch party and/or checking out the Foundations of Theater 10 Minute Playfest.

Putting into practice the script analysis tools, theater design, and production aspects students have studied, the Foundations of Theater class produced and performed a series of 10 minute plays. Students, parents, and faculty stopped by the playfest to finish out the week with some laughter.

In the afternoon, the Black Student Union hosted an end of year event for students, families/caregivers, and faculty/staff. The event highlighted the work the BSU has completed and provided a moment to celebrate the community the club has cultivated and supported over the past year.
