The Times of Boston: MS students create student-led newspaper

Posted on April 25, 2023

After seeing a need for student-led newspapers in the Middle School, MS students have created The Times of Boston. The online newspaper consists of articles written by students about various topics from world news to science to sports.

The idea for the The Times of Boston first came to 6th grader Rishaan Chowdhury when reflecting on a publication he worked on in the past; “I like the idea of researching topics I’m interested in the news and sharing them with friends and family. I thought that was something I could add to Beaver.”

The first major obstacle when starting the publication was finding people to contribute. Currently, The Times of Boston is run by Rishaan Chowdhury ’29, Rafay Desautels ’29, and Jasper Ingenthron ’29. The team is small but mighty, as they have already published three editions of the paper since starting it at the beginning of 2023. The group hopes to include more contributors in the newspaper as they release more editions. When asked why someone should join The Times of Boston, Rafay says “getting your ideas out feels good and having other people see them is nice” and Rishaan states one should join “if you’re passionate about writing articles in general and especially about the news.”

Writing for The Times of Boston has allowed each member to expand upon their interests. For Jasper, what’s most exciting is “researching new things and topics I thought I knew a lot about but actually don’t.” Rishaan’s interests are in major news and diplomacy, while Rafay’s are in hockey and video games. By having an outlet to write and share new information, The Times of Boston has become much more than a newspaper- it’s a place for students to showcase what they are passionate about.

Looking ahead, the group has plans to expand the newspaper to other schools. Rishaan mentions that “the reason it’s named the Times of Boston was because I didn’t want it to be only a Beaver thing. In our third addition, we had poetry from another school. My idea was to have a way for students all over Boston to write articles”. In the near future, The Times of Boston plans to release more articles throughout the rest of the school year and into summer.
