US Weekly Wrap-Up: 02.17.23

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—February 13 through February 17 —in the Upper School. 


At a US meeting on Monday, Head of School Kim Samson spoke to students about parking on Beaver’s campus. Updates about wrestling, US arts, and Beaver’s Model UN club were also discussed. The Hiatt Center shared details about the We Have a Dream Action Institute & Rally in Tulsa, OK that students are invited to apply to. The institute will bring together leaders from high schools in every state with the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre as a jumping board for reflection and learning. The application (which can be found here) is due Friday, March 3.


Tuesday was US Dam Day for Beaver students. In an exciting announcement on Monday, it was revealed that students would be taken off campus for Valentine’s Day. On Tuesday, the location for Dam Day- Apex Entertainment- was revealed and students spent the day bowling, playing laser tag, and competing in arcade games.


During Club Block on Wednesday, student leaders from DECA spoke about the club and their recent accomplishments. You can read more about DECA here.

A walking tour of the Black Heritage Trail + Freedom Trail took place for 9th grade students in the Nations and Nationalism class. For the past few weeks, students have studied past abolitionists and made connections to our present.


The founder of Dumpling Daughter, Nadia Liu Spellman, spoke to students on Thursday. Spellman discussed her upbringing in Boston and how she was inspired to create Dumpling Daughter to bring her love of food to a wider audience. As part of the discussion, Dumpling Daughter investor (and BVR alum!) Andy Spellman spoke about the business side of following your passions.


On Friday, the Theories of Punishments class took a trip to MCI Norfolk. In the weeks leading to the trip, students learned about the criminal justice system and the various processes associated with it.
