Beaver Glass Orchestra members collaborated with the youngest members of the Boston Music Project’s Mozart Orchestra to build paper instruments. Hosted by Josiah Quincy School, the program encourages deeper learning and community building while allowing young musicians to get acquainted with the look and feel of instruments. Beaver has been participating in the Paper Instrument Project since 2019, adapting the program over time to meet COVID protocols.
The Boston Music Project prioritizes musical excellence, social emotional development, civic engagement, and creative self-expression through their various programs. The director of the Boston Music Project, Christopher Schroeder, visited Beaver earlier this year to speak to students about the program and their core beliefs. Schroeder also spoke on behalf of the 4-5-year-olds that Beaver students would later connect with.
After the instruments were assembled using kits provided by Beaver, the next step was to paper mache the exteriors. This is where Beaver Middle Schoolers came in! Beaver students visited Josiah Quincy School to assist kids in coating the exterior of the instruments with glue and paper, which many of the younger kids were hesitant to do. Despite this, the Mozart Orchestra students were excited to meet Beaver students and ask them questions about the instruments. The next step for the Mozart Orchestra members is to decorate and paint their instruments to their liking.
