Upper School Weekly Wrap-Up: 2.28.22

Finals Week Winter 22

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—February 28 through March 3 —in the Upper School. School is closed Friday.

Congrats to our Girls Varsity Basketball team who won the EIL tournament over the weekend and is seeded #3 in NEPSAC tournament. They played their first game on Wednesday against Ethel Walker and won 45-40. They play St. Luke’s on Saturday in the NEPSAC Semi-Finals

Students spent the week wrapping up the winter term.
End of Winter Clubs
Monday was the last day of winter clubs. From jewelry-making to MUN to Anime, we spent the term talking to students about their clubs and what they were doing and learning. Check out our club spotlights here and get excited for all the spring posts coming your way, starting next week! Students enjoyed hot breakfast.

Also of note on Monday, for the first time since 2020, masks were optional for fully-vaccinated students, faculty, and staff. Visitors are still required to mask, regardless of vaccination status.

Tuesday marked the first day of Women’s History Month. Throughout the month, we’ll have discussions and activities in classes and in meetings.

Tuesday was also the day we wrapped up the Upper School winter music season with the Upper School Instrumental Music Concert in Bradley Hall. Earlier in the day, the instrumental students performed for 9th and 10th grade advisories and held a special mini-concert just for MS students.

Tuesday afternoon (and again on Thursday), Spring athletes and their families gathered to meet the spring coaches and hear about the upcoming athletics season. They also heard a welcome from Nancy Collins, Director of Athletics, Alex Gould, Assistant Director of Athletics, Alyssa Hart, Athletics Trainer, and Chai Reddy, Director of Upper School

In Upper School Meeting Tuesday, students learned about the Hiatt Summer Fellowship. The Hiatt Summer Fellowship (HSF) provides returning Beaver students (grades 6-11) the financial support to take the initiative to explore and participate in meaningful leadership and civic engagement opportunities with non-profit organizations during the summer. Applications are due Friday, May 20, 2022; you can read more about the program here.

Wednesday afternoon students had the chance to hear Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics talk about sports, education, community outreach, and more.
Boston Celtics Grant Williams
Grant Williams spoke about his childhood and how activities outside of basketball helped him on his career path. He answered questions from students related to family, friends, mentorship, and overcoming obstacles. One lucky student received a basketball signed from Williams. Two students received 2 tickets to the Boston Celtics game.

Wednesday evening Senior parents/caregivers gathered around fire pits with margaritas and tacos in the Front Circle. This informal parent social was one of the first times this group of parents was able to get together in-person, on-campus, and it was wonderful to celebrate the class of 2022 and each other!

In US Advisory Meetings on Thursday, 9th grade students were given an overview of the 9th Grade Civic Design Challenge activity, which is coming up on March 7. In addition, 9th and 10th grade students had conversations reflecting on the end of the term, while 11th and 12th grade students had open advisory.

Thursday was the last day of the winter term (there were no classes Friday); we’re excited to see what spring has in store for us!
